7 Days to Die is a genre-defining open-world zombie survival game developed by The Fun Pimps. First released in Early Access in 2013, the game blends first-person combat, crafting, base building, tower defense, and RPG progression into one of the most complete survival experiences on the market. After over a decade of active development and more than 20 million copies sold, 7 Days to Die reached its 1.0 release and continues to receive major content updates that push the boundaries of the survival genre.
Players are dropped into a post-apocalyptic world overrun by the undead, where every seven days a Blood Moon horde descends on their position. Between horde nights, survivors scavenge over 700 unique locations across procedurally generated or hand-crafted maps spanning up to 100 square kilometers. The core gameplay loop revolves around gathering resources, building and fortifying bases with physics-based structural integrity, crafting over 500 recipes, and leveling up through a deep perk system tied to five core attributes. Whether you prefer solo play or coordinating with friends on a dedicated server, every decision matters when the next Blood Moon is always counting down.
What sets 7 Days to Die apart from other survival games is the depth of its interconnected systems. Base building uses real structural integrity calculations, meaning poorly designed structures will collapse under their own weight. Combat features nearly 60 unique zombie archetypes, each with distinct behaviors and attack patterns that escalate in difficulty. The crafting system spans weapons, armor, tools, vehicles, traps, electric power systems, auto turrets, and automated doors. RPG progression is handled through five attribute trees with 10 perks each, five levels per perk, plus over 100 skill books and new Mastery Perks that unlock powerful combat abilities like Grand Slam and Siphoning Strikes.
Exploration is equally deep. Maps feature five distinct biomes: Pine Forest, Burnt Forest, Desert, Snow, and Wasteland, each with unique resources, enemy types, and environmental challenges. Players can take on quests from Trader NPCs across more than 700 hand-crafted locations, from small residential houses to massive industrial complexes and Tier 5 wilderness dungeons. The game also supports extensive modding, allowing communities to create custom content, gameplay overhauls, and entirely new experiences.
The "Storm's Brewing" update is the largest content drop since 1.0 and fundamentally transforms how dedicated servers play. It introduces a Biome Progression system where each of the five biomes presents unique environmental hazards that players must overcome to earn Biome Badges by completing seven challenges per biome. A new Dynamic Storm System adds five storm types: Thunderstorms that affect all biomes, Ember Storms in the Burnt Forest, Sand Storms in the Desert, Snow Storms in the Snow biome, and deadly Radiation Storms in the Wasteland. Server administrators can configure storm frequency from 0% (disabled) to 500% (maximum intensity) through serverconfig.xml or our control panel.
Storm's Brewing also introduces cross-platform dedicated server support for the first time in 7 Days to Die history, allowing PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S players to survive together on the same server with up to 8 players. The update adds 140 new Points of Interest including three massive Tier 5 wilderness locations (bunker_00, mine_01, and quarry_02), two new zombie types (the Plague Spitter with insect swarm attacks and the Frost Claw with boulder throws), native Discord integration with voice chat and Rich Presence, DLSS upscaling for improved performance, and a completely redesigned Navezgane map with updated biome boundaries and trader positions.
7 Days to Die is one of the most resource-intensive survival games to host. The game engine simulates physics-based structural integrity in real time, tracks thousands of zombie spawn points across the map, processes complex horde AI pathfinding during Blood Moon events, and manages persistent world state across massive procedurally generated maps. The Storm's Brewing update adds dynamic weather calculations and biome hazard processing on top of all that, making server hardware performance more critical than ever.
A dedicated server with strong single-thread CPU performance, fast NVMe storage, and sufficient DDR5 RAM is essential for smooth gameplay. This is especially true during Blood Moon horde nights when dozens of zombies pathfind simultaneously toward player bases, and during dynamic storm events where environmental hazard calculations run across the entire active map. Hosting on shared or underpowered hardware leads to tick rate drops, rubber-banding, and desync issues that ruin the survival experience for everyone on the server.

Step-by-step server guides from our official documentation.
Everything you need to know about running a 7 Days to Die dedicated server — from Blood Moon configuration to mod installation and world generation.
The Blood Moon is 7 Days to Die's defining survival event — every 7 in-game days, massive waves of zombies relentlessly attack your base. This interval is configurable in serverconfig.xml using BloodMoonFrequency (set it to every 3, 5, 10 days, or disable it entirely with 0). You can also adjust BloodMoonEnemyCount to control how many zombies spawn per player and BloodMoonRange to set the detection radius. Building a structurally sound base with the game's voxel-based physics system is essential for surviving these sieges.
The default player limit in 7 Days to Die is 8, but dedicated servers can be increased to 16 or more players with adequate hardware. Higher player counts significantly increase RAM and CPU usage, especially during Blood Moon hordes when zombie spawns scale per player. For servers with 8+ players, we recommend at least 8GB RAM and 3 CPU cores. The MaxPlayers setting in serverconfig.xml controls this value directly.
7 Days to Die offers three world options for dedicated servers. Navezgane is the hand-crafted static map designed by The Fun Pimps with carefully placed POIs and biomes. Random World Generator (RWG) creates unique procedural maps from a seed value you set in serverconfig.xml, controlling map size and terrain. Community tools like Nitrogen and KingGen let you generate custom maps with precise control over city count, biome distribution, road layouts, and POI density — these maps are uploaded to the server via SFTP.
The serverconfig.xml file controls every aspect of your 7D2D server. Key settings include ServerPort (default 26900 TCP/UDP), BloodMoonFrequency, MaxSpawnedZombies, LootRespawnDays (how often containers refill), XPMultiplier (speed up or slow progression), LandClaimSize (base protection radius), DayNightLength (default 60 real-time minutes per in-game day), and DropOnDeath (nothing, toolbelt, backpack, or everything). All of these are editable through our control panel without touching the file directly.
The heat map is an invisible system that tracks player activity in each chunk. Running forges, campfires, chemical stations, and firing weapons all generate "heat" that attracts zombie attention. When heat reaches a threshold, screamer zombies spawn and patrol the area — if they spot players, they shriek to summon additional hordes. Smart base design separates crafting stations from living quarters. Server admins can influence heat map intensity indirectly through MaxSpawnedZombies and zombie spawn rate settings in serverconfig.xml.
7D2D supports two mod types: XML modlets and full overhaul mods. Modlets are lightweight XML modifications that tweak recipes, loot tables, zombie behavior, or add items — install them by dropping the folder into the server's Mods directory via SFTP. Full overhaul mods like Darkness Falls (adds demons, classes, and endgame progression), Undead Legacy (complete crafting rework), and War of the Walkers (expanded content and quests) transform the entire game. Overhaul mods require all connecting players to install matching client-side files.
A vanilla 7D2D server with 2-4 players needs around 4-6GB RAM. For 8 players on a procedurally generated world, 8GB is recommended since RWG maps consume more memory than Navezgane. Overhaul mods like Darkness Falls can demand 8-12GB due to additional zombie types, expanded POIs, and complex crafting systems. RAM usage also grows over time as players explore more chunks — the more of the map that's been visited, the more data the server holds in memory.
7D2D features five skill trees — Strength, Fortitude, Agility, Intellect, and Perception — each unlocking unique perks, weapon specializations, and crafting recipes. Intellect is particularly important for multiplayer as it unlocks vehicle crafting: bicycle, minibike, motorcycle, 4x4 truck, and gyrocopter. The trader system provides quest missions (fetch, clear zombies, dig, and buried supply runs) that reward Duke tokens and skill points. Server admins can adjust XPMultiplier in serverconfig.xml to speed up or slow down progression for their community.
