Rust is brutal to newcomers, especially on wipe day when everyone’s racing for the same spots. But your first day comes down to a clear set of priorities done in the right order. This guide is a wipe-day survival plan \u2014 a priority timeline, your opening minutes, a starter base, tools, scrap and surviving the first night \u2014 so you spend less time naked with a rock and more time geared.<\/p>\n\n

1. Gather and tool up fast<\/h2>\n

You spawn with a rock and a torch. Hit trees and stone nodes for wood and stone, then craft a stone hatchet and pickaxe<\/strong> (they gather faster and double as weapons in a pinch), and a bow<\/strong> for defence and hunting. Speed matters on wipe day \u2014 the faster you tool up, the less time you spend vulnerable with just a rock. Kill the odd animal for meat and hide while you gather.<\/p>\n\n

2. Build a starter base<\/h2>\n

Place a Tool Cupboard<\/strong> first (it protects your build and stops others building nearby), then a small 2×1 or 1×1<\/strong> base with a code-locked door<\/strong> and ideally an airlock. Upgrade to stone as fast as you can<\/strong> \u2014 twig and wood are raided in seconds, while stone forces a raider to spend real explosives. Pick a spot with resources nearby but not directly on top of a major monument, where you’ll be constantly contested.<\/p>\n\n

3. Workbench & scrap<\/h2>\n

Farm roadside barrels<\/strong> for scrap and components, and craft a Workbench Level 1<\/strong> (50 scrap) to start unlocking gear. The Custom SMG is the best first gun for the scrap.
