The Swamp is Valheim’s third biome and a major difficulty spike — dark, perpetually raining, and full of poison. But it’s the only source of iron, so you can’t skip it. This guide covers how to survive and progress the Swamp.<\/p>\n

Key resource: Iron<\/h2>\n

Iron comes from Scrap Iron<\/strong> mined inside Sunken Crypts<\/strong>, which you can only open with the Swamp Key<\/strong> dropped by The Elder. You’ll also gather Ancient Bark<\/strong> (from Swamp trees) and Withered Bones<\/strong> for the boss. Iron unlocks much stronger weapons, armor and tools.<\/p>\n

Dangers<\/h2>\n

The Swamp is brutal: Draugr<\/strong> and Draugr Elites<\/strong>, Blobs<\/strong> and Oozers<\/strong> (poison), Leeches<\/strong> in the water, Wraiths<\/strong> at night, and Surtlings<\/strong> near fire geysers. Poison is the big killer — brew Poison Resistance mead<\/strong> before you go (see our mead guide<\/a>). It’s always raining here, so you can’t rely on frost mead, and the ground is treacherous.<\/p>\n
