This guide lists the best Y level for every ore in Minecraft 1.21<\/strong> \u2014 diamonds, iron, gold, redstone, copper, coal, lapis, and emerald \u2014 so you always dig at the right depth.<\/p>\n

Good news:<\/strong> ore generation has not changed since Minecraft 1.18 introduced the new world height and distribution system. So these levels are accurate for 1.18, 1.19, 1.20, and 1.21<\/strong> alike.<\/p>\n

Diamond \u2014 best Y level -59<\/h2>\n

Diamonds peak at Y -59<\/strong>, where ore density is highest. Many players actually mine at Y -54<\/strong> instead: you give up a little density to sit a few blocks above the worst of the lava lakes, which makes branch mining safer and faster overall. Anywhere from Y -59 to -54<\/strong> is the diamond sweet spot. Below Y -8 diamonds become steadily more common, so never mine for them near the surface.<\/p>\n

Redstone \u2014 best Y level -59<\/h2>\n

Redstone follows the same curve as diamond, spawning from Y -64 to 16<\/strong> and becoming far more common the deeper you go, with the best results at Y -59<\/strong>. That means a single deep branch mine around Y -58 nets you both diamond and redstone at once \u2014 the most efficient depth in the game.<\/p>\n

Gold \u2014 best Y level -18<\/h2>\n

Gold spawns from Y -64 to 32<\/strong>, peaking around Y -18<\/strong>. The big exception is the Badlands (Mesa) biome<\/strong>, where gold generates with a much higher frequency and a far wider range \u2014 you’ll find loads of it near the surface and at any level Y 32 or above. If you need gold in bulk, a Badlands biome beats deep mining every time.<\/p>\n

Lapis Lazuli \u2014 best Y level -2<\/h2>\n

Lapis has a distribution centred around Y -2<\/strong>, ranging from Y -64 to 64<\/strong>. It’s most common right around that sea-level-adjacent depth, so it often turns up naturally while you’re mining toward diamond depth.<\/p>\n

Iron \u2014 best Y levels 16 and 232<\/h2>\n

Iron is unusual: it has two separate peaks<\/strong>. Underground, it’s densest around Y 16<\/strong>. But the bigger surprise is in mountain biomes above Y 80<\/strong>, where iron generates in huge exposed blobs that peak around Y 232<\/strong>. If you’re near tall mountains, surface-mining iron there is dramatically faster than digging for it.<\/p>\n

Copper \u2014 best Y level 48<\/h2>\n

Copper ranges from Y -16 to 112<\/strong>, peaking around Y 48<\/strong>. It’s especially abundant in dripstone caves<\/strong>, which generate large copper deposits, so exploring a dripstone cave network is the fastest way to stockpile it.<\/p>\n

Coal \u2014 best Y level 45<\/h2>\n

Coal is the most common ore in the Overworld, with an enormous range from Y 0 all the way to 320<\/strong> and the highest density around Y 45<\/strong>. You’ll rarely need to go looking for it \u2014 it shows up in cliffsides, caves, and almost any dig \u2014 but mid-elevation mining yields the most.<\/p>\n

Emerald \u2014 best Y level 224 (mountains only)<\/h2>\n

Emerald is the trickiest ore: it generates only in mountain biomes<\/strong> (and their variants), no matter how deep you dig elsewhere. Within mountains it peaks high up around Y 224<\/strong>. If you’re digging in flat terrain hoping for emeralds, you’re wasting your time \u2014 head for the peaks.<\/p>\n
