It carries a power signal from a source (like a lever) through redstone dust and components to do something useful (like opening a door or lighting a lamp). It looks intimidating, but the whole system runs on one simple idea: a signal with a strength, traveling from block to block. Get that idea and the rest clicks into place. This beginner guide explains the core components with verified mechanics, then walks you through three builds you can finish in a few minutes.

The one rule that explains everything: signal strength

A redstone signal has a signal strength, an integer from 1 to 15 (0 means no signal). A power source produces a signal, and redstone dust carries it. The key thing to remember: redstone dust loses 1 signal strength for every block it travels. Because a fresh source outputs strength 15, a single line of dust can carry that signal a maximum of 15 blocks before it dies out completely.

That 15-block limit is the single most useful number for a beginner. If a lever lights a lamp but the same lever 16 blocks away does nothing, you are not broken, you have simply run out of signal. The fix is a repeater (more on that below), which resets the signal back to full strength.

Timing is measured in game ticks. A game tick is 1/20 of a second (0.05 seconds), so the game runs at 20 ticks per second. You will also hear “redstone ticks”, which equal 2 game ticks (0.1 seconds). You do not need this for your first builds, but it explains why some components have a tiny delay.

The core components and what they do

Every redstone build is some mix of three jobs: making a signal (power components), moving it (transmission), and acting on it (mechanism components). Here are the ones a beginner actually needs, with verified crafting recipes and behavior.

Component

What it does

How to craft

Redstone dust

Wire that carries the signal; loses 1 strength per block, max 15 blocks

Mined from redstone ore (or other sources)

Lever

Manual on/off switch that stays in position

Cobblestone + stick

Redstone torch

Outputs power; inverts its attachment block’s signal (0 becomes 15, any of 1–15 becomes 0)

Redstone dust + stick

Redstone repeater

Boosts a signal back to strength 15, forces one-way flow, and adds delay (1–4 redstone ticks)

2 redstone torches + 1 redstone dust + 3 stone

Redstone comparator

Compares or subtracts signals; reads container fullness

3 redstone torches + 1 nether quartz + 3 stone

Piston / sticky piston

Pushes blocks when powered; sticky also pulls a block back

3 planks + 4 cobblestone + 1 iron ingot + 1 redstone (sticky: + slimeball)

Redstone lamp

Solid light source that glows (light level 15) while powered

4 redstone dust + 1 glowstone

Observer

Detects a change in the block in front of it and fires a short pulse

6 cobblestone + 2 redstone dust + 1 nether quartz

The repeater: your most important early tool

The redstone repeater does three jobs at once, which is why beginners should learn it early. First, it repeats: as long as its back is powered, its front outputs a full-strength signal of 15, so you can chain repeaters to send power any distance. Second, it only lets signal flow one direction (back to front), which prevents wiring from feeding back on itself. Third, you can right-click it to add delay in four steps: 1, 2, 3, or 4 redstone ticks, which is 2, 4, 6, or 8 game ticks (0.1 to 0.4 seconds).

A repeater can also be locked by powering it from the side with another repeater or a comparator, freezing its output. That is an advanced trick, but it is good to know the little movable bars on top are not decoration.

Build 1: a switch-controlled lamp

This is the “hello world” of redstone. Place a redstone lamp, put a lever on the block right next to it, and flip the lever. The lamp lights instantly and shines at light level 15. In Java Edition the lamp takes 4 game ticks (0.2 seconds) to turn off; in Bedrock Edition it takes 6 game ticks (0.3 seconds). To light a lamp from across a room, run redstone dust from the lever to the lamp, remembering the 15-block limit. Need to go farther? Drop a repeater into the line to reset the signal to 15 and keep going.

Build 2: a piston door (1×1)

Place a sticky piston so its head faces into a gap in a wall, and put a block on the piston head to plug the hole. Wire a lever to the piston. When powered, the piston extends in 2 game ticks (0.1 seconds) and seals the gap; when you flip the lever off, the sticky piston pulls the block back and opens the doorway. A regular piston would leave the block stuck out front because only sticky pistons pull blocks back on retraction. Note that a piston can push up to 12 blocks at once, and some blocks (obsidian, bedrock, and others) cannot be pushed at all.

Build 3: an inverter (NOT gate)

Sometimes you want something on when the input is off. That is what a redstone torch does: attach a torch to the side of a block, and feed a signal into that block. While the block is unpowered the torch is lit (output 15); power the block and the torch turns off. This single-component “NOT gate” is the foundation of doorbells, traps, and logic. One caution: a torch suffers burnout if it is forced off more than eight times within 60 game ticks (3 seconds), so avoid hooking one up to a super-fast flashing clock.

Where to go next

Once switches, lamps, and pistons feel natural, the comparator opens up automation. It has two modes you toggle by right-clicking (comparison and subtraction), and it can read how full a container is, outputting a signal strength based on capacity. That is the gateway to auto-sorters and farm logic. Speaking of farms, redstone shines when you wire it into resource production. See our guide to automatic crop farms for wheat, carrots, melon and sugarcane and the Nether gold farm build for redstone-powered projects worth your dust. If you want efficient villager hookups too, the villager trading guide pairs nicely with redstone trading halls.

Redstone is far more fun to learn alongside other people who can test your contraptions and pool resources. Running a shared world on a always-on Minecraft server you and your friends can build on together means your farms keep ticking even when you log off. For setup walkthroughs and panel help, our Minecraft server documentation covers the details.

Frequently asked questions

How far can redstone dust carry a signal?

A single line of redstone dust carries a signal a maximum of 15 blocks. The signal starts at strength 15 from a full source and drops by 1 for each block of dust it crosses, so at 15 blocks it reaches 0 and stops. To go farther, place a redstone repeater in the line, which resets the signal back to 15.

What is the difference between a piston and a sticky piston?

Both extend a head to push blocks when powered. The difference is on retraction: a sticky piston (crafted by adding a slimeball to a piston) pulls the pushed block back when it retracts, while a regular piston leaves the block where it pushed it. Use sticky pistons for doors and anything that needs to move a block back and forth.

Does redstone work the same in Java and Bedrock?

The core rules (signal strength 1–15, the 15-block dust limit, repeater delays) are the same, but there are edition-specific quirks. For example, a redstone lamp takes 4 game ticks to turn off in Java versus 6 in Bedrock, and repeaters and comparators are waterloggable in Bedrock but not in Java. Observers also behave slightly differently: Java detects block “shape updates” while Bedrock detects broader block updates. Test your build in the edition you actually play.

Redstone is Minecraft’s wiring system.
