The good news is that none of the four spawns are unwinnable – the planet is generous – but some are far friendlier to a first playthrough than others. Grass Fields – the safe, flat favourite<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Grass Fields are the classic “first save” pick and the wiki literally calls them “ideal for first-time pioneers.” The draw is obvious the moment you arrive: a large, open grassy area with very low terrain difficulty, dotted with distinctive stone arches. You can drop foundations almost anywhere without fighting slopes, which makes your first factory clean and easy to extend. Iron, copper and limestone are all within reach, and hogs – the most basic hostile creature – are about all you have to worry about for wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The catch is distance. The mining nodes are spread out, so the wiki notes that “building outposts and\/or large transportation lines may be necessary eventually.” Coal sits well to the south of the biome, and water is comparatively scarce, so the moment you need coal power or oil processing you will be reaching outside your comfortable starting bubble. Many of the nearby nodes are impure or normal purity rather than pure, which means lower throughput per miner. None of this is fatal – it just front-loads a logistics lesson. Rocky Desert – the best all-round beginner spot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you want one recommendation, the Rocky Desert is it. The wiki describes it as “the textbook example of a FICSIT-approved building location, with balanced resources, space, and distances,” and that balance is exactly why it edges out the Grass Fields for a first save. The terrain rates as moderate – flatter than the forest, not as billiard-table-perfect as the fields, but very workable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What sets it apart is early access to the resources that usually force a long trek elsewhere. You have iron, copper and limestone, and crucially you get coal and sulfur close to hand, with water and oil reachable along the coast. Being “very close to the sea” means water – which you need for coal generators, then everything downstream – is an easy commodity instead of a scavenger hunt. The biome also hides some endgame curiosities, including Quartz nodes, a SAM node and one of the planet’s Uranium nodes atop its highest point, but those are for much later. For a new player, the headline is simple: fewer early bottlenecks, smoother progression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Northern Forest – rich resources, harder terrain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Northern Forest is gorgeous and resource-rich, sitting near the centre of the map with strong iron, copper and limestone availability and convenient routes into neighbouring biomes. The wiki calls it “a lush building location with many height differences,” and that phrase is both the appeal and the warning. The uneven, hilly ground makes early-game base building difficult without Foundations – the same slopes that look great in screenshots will fight your belt routing and machine placement before you’ve unlocked the tools to flatten everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For an experienced player who already thinks in foundation grids and vertical layouts, the forest’s central position and resource density are a genuine advantage. For a true beginner still learning what a Smelter even does, the constant terrain wrangling adds friction at the worst possible time. Treat the Northern Forest as a “second playthrough” location, or pick it only if you’re confident with foundations from the start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dune Desert – abundant ore, awkward early game<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Dune Desert in the northeast surprises people: it’s flat and open, so the building experience itself is comfortable. It also has a high overall resource amount with plentiful mining locations, which sounds like a beginner’s dream. The problem is what’s missing. The wiki notes that “foliage and water locations are rare and contained, making initial power setups challenging.” Biomass for your first Biomass Burners is thin on the ground, and water – again, the lifeblood of coal power – is hard to find and limited when you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’ll also tangle with more hostile creatures here. None of this stops a veteran who can plan power and water routing in advance and exploit the rich ore, but it punishes the trial-and-error learning that defines a first playthrough.
