The Moon Lord is Terraria’s final boss, a colossal Cthulhu-like horror that arrives only after you have cleared the entire Hardmode endgame. Beating it requires good gear, a purpose-built arena, and a clear understanding of its eyes and attacks. This guide walks through summoning the Moon Lord, the order in which you destroy its body parts, how to survive the dreaded Phantasmal Deathray, and the powerful Luminite-tier loot waiting on the other side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Summon the Moon Lord<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Moon Lord cannot be fought until you have beaten Golem, the Lunatic Cultist, and the four Celestial Pillars. The chain begins at the Dungeon entrance, where Cultists gather after Golem is defeated. Killing the four ritual Cultists summons the Lunatic Cultist<\/strong> (32,000 HP in Classic, 48,000 in Expert, 61,200 in Master). Note that the Lunatic Cultist takes only 75% damage from homing projectiles, so plan accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defeating the Lunatic Cultist triggers the message “Celestial creatures are invading!” and spawns the four Celestial Pillars<\/strong>, each tied to a damage class: Solar<\/strong> (melee), Vortex<\/strong> (ranged), Nebula<\/strong> (magic), and Stardust<\/strong> (summon). Each pillar has a protective shield that drops only after you defeat 100 of its unique nearby enemies. The kill count does not reset if you die, but it does reset if you leave the world. Once all four pillars are destroyed, a 60-second countdown begins (the screen oscillates) and the Moon Lord arrives with “Impending doom approaches\u2026”. Alternatively, you can summon it manually at any time with a Celestial Sigil<\/strong>, crafted from 20 of each Lunar Fragment plus Nebula, Solar, Stardust, and Vortex pieces \u2014 this uses a shorter 12-second countdown and lets you skip the pillars on repeat kills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Moon Lord’s Body Parts and HP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Moon Lord is not a single health bar \u2014 it is three eyes that must be destroyed before the core becomes vulnerable. Two eyes sit in its hands and one in its forehead. Only after all three eyes are gone can you damage the core<\/strong>, which contains the True Eye of Cthulhu in its chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When each eye is destroyed it spawns an invincible True Eye of Cthulhu<\/strong> that floats free and keeps attacking with its own bolts, spheres, eyes, and a smaller deathray until the whole fight ends. This means the longer the battle drags on, the more bullet hell builds up \u2014 so kill the eyes quickly rather than chipping at all three slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attacks and the Phantasmal Deathray<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Moon Lord’s eyes fire a layered set of projectiles. The hand eyes spawn Phantasmal Spheres<\/strong> (six at a time, exploding after a short delay) and predictive Phantasmal Bolts<\/strong> that pass through blocks. Phantasmal Eyes<\/strong> home in on you but cannot angle steeply upward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most dangerous attack is the Phantasmal Deathray<\/strong>, fired only by the forehead eye roughly every 20\u201321 seconds. It is a large laser that sweeps 60\u00b0 upward and cannot be blocked by solid blocks. It deals 150 damage in Classic, 300 in Expert, and 450 in Master \u2014 easily a one-shot if you are caught standing in it. Dodging the deathray reliably is the single biggest skill check of the fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Moon Lord also uses a Moon Leech Tentacle<\/strong> that reaches through blocks and spawns Moon Leech Clots; if a clot reaches its mouth, the boss heals 1,000 HP, so destroy those clots fast. Touching the mouth area, or being hit by certain attacks, inflicts the Moon Bite<\/strong> debuff, which prevents you from absorbing any healing effects for 14 seconds (16 in Expert). Avoid drinking potions or relying on lifesteal while Moon Bite is active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building the Arena<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Moon Lord teleports to the nearest player if you move more than 150 tiles away, and enemies\/critters will not spawn within 281.25 tiles of its core during the fight, so you do not need to worry about extra mobs. A good arena emphasizes horizontal movement and mobility rather than walls, since bolts and the deathray pass through blocks anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
