Pick the wrong building grade and a roaming player picks your walls with a stone tool; ignore your Tool Cupboard and your hard-earned stone base quietly decays into rubble. This guide breaks down the four upgrade tiers (plus twig), the Building Plan and Hammer, building privilege and upkeep, stability, and the soft-versus-hard-side mechanic that decides how long your walls survive a raid. Because Rust updates monthly, treat exact values as version-dependent and verify the current numbers in-game.

The two tools: Building Plan and Hammer

Every base starts with two cheap craftable tools. The Building Plan (crafted for 20 wood) is what you use to place new structures. Hold right-click to open the building wheel and choose a piece: square foundation, triangle foundation, wall, doorway, window, floor, roof and more. Everything you place starts as twig, paid for in wood.

The Hammer (crafted for 100 wood) does the rest. Hold right-click on a twig structure to open the upgrade wheel and pick a higher grade, provided you have the materials and building privilege. Left-click with the Hammer repairs damaged blocks, and the “E” menu lets you rotate or demolish a piece for a short window after placing it. The percentage you see when looking at a block at melee range with the Hammer equipped is its stability, covered below.

Building grades: twig to armored

Rust has four real upgrade tiers (Wood, Stone, Sheet Metal, Armored) on top of the temporary twig state. Walls cannot be placed directly at a higher grade; you always place twig first, then upgrade with the Hammer. Twig exists to be cheap and disposable while you lay out a footprint, but it can be hit through with a tool or even hands, so upgrade anything you care about immediately. Stone is the practical minimum for protection; wood burns to fire arrows and incendiary, and twig gets picked apart for free.

The table below lists wall hit points and rough upgrade costs by tier. These are the widely reported values, but Facepunch tunes balance regularly, so confirm them against the in-game upgrade wheel on the server you play.

Grade

Wall HP

Upgrade material

Notes

Twig

Very low

Wood (place cost)

Temporary; pickable by hand/tools. Never leave loot behind it.

Wood

~250

Wood

Cheap, but flammable. Vulnerable to fire and melee.

Stone

~500

Stone

The standard early/mid base. Fire-proof, good melee resistance.

Sheet Metal

~1000

Metal Fragments

Highly melee-resistant; the workhorse raid-worthy tier.

Armored

~2000

High Quality Metal

Strongest wall; expensive, usually reserved for core loot rooms.

Each tier is a trade-off between cost and resistance. Most players run a stone or sheet-metal shell and reserve armored walls for the single room protecting their valuables, because high quality metal is slow to farm. For how those walls actually hold up against explosives, see our companion Rust raiding guide.

The Tool Cupboard and building privilege

The Tool Cupboard (TC), crafted for 1000 wood, is the single most important deployable in any base. Place it on a foundation and the deployer is automatically authorized. Teammates must walk up and press “E” to authorize themselves; anyone with access can clear all authorized users at once. Authorization grants building privilege: only authorized players can build, upgrade, rotate or pick up deployables inside the privilege zone, and it’s also required to arm flame and shotgun traps.

The privilege radius is projected from your foundations rather than a fixed point at the cupboard. The reliable way to map it is to run the perimeter and watch the “BUILDING PRIVILEGE” indicator appear and disappear. Hiding and protecting your TC matters because controlling it means controlling who can build on top of your base, a key reason to lock down your loot room.

Upkeep and decay

The TC also pays your base’s upkeep: a fraction of the resources it cost to build, consumed over time to stop decay. Only the structure itself counts toward upkeep, the walls, foundations, ceilings, roofs, doors and window pieces. Items inside (sleeping bags, boxes, furnaces) do not. A fully stone base with sheet-metal doors therefore costs only stone and metal fragments to maintain, so stock the TC with matching materials.

When the TC runs dry, structures decay on a timer that scales with their grade. Twig decays fastest, armored slowest:

Twig: ~1 hour

Wood: ~3 hours

Stone: ~5 hours

Sheet Metal: ~8 hours

Armored: ~12 hours

Bigger footprints cost proportionally more upkeep, which is why sprawling bases are expensive to hold. If a TC is destroyed during a raid, it consumes up to roughly 24 hours of upkeep as grief protection so attackers can’t instantly claim the spot. To estimate exactly how long an empty base survives, our Rust decay calculator does the math by grade.

Stability mechanics

Stability stops you from building floating mega-structures. Pieces on the ground sit at full stability, and the percentage drops the further a block extends upward or outward from solid support. Look at any block at melee range with the Hammer to read its stability percentage. If a piece reaches 0% stability it collapses instantly, whether on placement or after the support beneath it is destroyed, which is exactly why raiders blow foundations and pillars to drop entire floors.

You improve stability by giving blocks something to lean on: foundations on the ground, walls and floors that brace each other, and internal doorways and walls that “support” the rest of the structure. Note that the old standalone pillars were removed from the game, so modern stability comes from thoughtful layout rather than dropping a pillar under a weak spot. Keep tall sections tightly supported and avoid long unsupported overhangs.

Soft side vs hard side

Most walls have a soft side and a hard side. The soft side is the one showing the support beams or palings and takes more melee damage; the hard, smoother side is more resistant. The golden rule is to face the hard side outward so attackers chip at the tougher surface from outside, while the weaker soft side faces into your base. Press “R” while placing or use the Hammer to flip a wall’s orientation if it’s the wrong way around. The same logic applies to floors, where the underside is the soft side.

One important caveat: this soft/hard difference mainly affects melee and chip damage. Explosives are generally reported to deal full damage regardless of side, so the soft side mostly matters against pickaxe and tool raids, not C4 or rockets. Either way, building “inside-out” with the textured face exposed is a classic beginner mistake worth avoiding.

FAQ

What building tier should I use as a solo player?

Stone is the sweet spot for solos and duos: it’s fire-proof, cheap to upkeep, and resistant enough to make raiders spend real explosives. Upgrade your loot room and any external doors toward sheet metal as you gather, and treat wood as a temporary stage you pass through quickly.

Why is my base decaying even though I built it?

Decay happens when your Tool Cupboard is empty or missing. Place a TC, authorize to it, and keep it stocked with the materials your base is made of (stone, wood, metal fragments). If you ever lose authorization or the TC is destroyed, the base will begin decaying on the per-grade timers listed above.

Are the HP and cost numbers exact?

They’re the commonly reported values, but Rust receives monthly balance patches, so treat every precise figure as version-dependent. The in-game upgrade wheel and the hover tooltip on each block are always the source of truth for the server you’re playing on.

Keep learning

Once your shell is up, layer on active defenses in our Rust base defense guide, plan your wipe-to-endgame route with the Rust progression guide, and coordinate walls and sleeping bags with friends using the Rust teams and clans guide. Building feels very different when you’re defending a base with a group, so it’s worth spinning up a server to build alongside friends at your own pace and wipe schedule.
