It turns a slow, dangerous looting run into a fast supply run, gives you a mobile storage box, and doubles as an escape pod when a horde catches you out. But a vehicle is only useful if you can start it, fuel it, and keep it running. This guide walks through finding cars and keys, hot-wiring engines, siphoning gas, repairing parts, and the Mechanics skill that ties it all together. Every mechanic below is checked against the official PZwiki, and where Build 41 (stable) and Build 42 (the unstable beta) behave differently, that difference is called out.

Finding cars and keys

Vehicles spawn parked throughout Knox County, often in varying condition, from near-new to crashed or burnt-out wrecks. A vehicle key only works on its specific car and is required to start the engine, unlock the doors, open the trunk, and use dashboard accessories. So the first job at any car is usually finding the key.

Per the wiki, a vehicle’s key can spawn in several places: in the ignition, in the glove box, on one of the vehicle’s doors, or on the body of a zombie standing near the car. Keys can also spawn further away from the vehicle entirely, on the ground, in a mailbox, in a container, inside a nearby residential house, or in a trash bin. Practically, that means you should check the seats and glove box first, then kill and loot any nearby zombies, then search the closest house if the car looks worth the effort.

Hot-wiring: starting a car without keys

If you cannot find a key, you can hot-wire the car instead. The “Hotwire Engine” option lets you start a vehicle when no key is in the ignition or on your person. According to the wiki, hot-wiring requires Electrical level 1 and Mechanics level 2. With those levels, you can hot-wire any vehicle and drive it without a key.

There’s a catch: hot-wiring carries a small chance of setting off the car alarm, which attracts zombies. Higher Electrical skill reduces that chance, and the wiki notes that cars in better condition are actually harder to hot-wire. The upside is that hot-wiring doesn’t damage the car or your tools, it can just make noise. If you want to build up the skills to do this reliably, see our Project Zomboid skills and leveling guide for how to grind Electrical and Mechanics XP.

Fuel: refueling and siphoning gas

A car with no fuel goes nowhere. You can refuel by right-clicking the vehicle and choosing refuel, and at the start of a game you can fill up at gas station pumps. The complication is the power grid: by default the electricity shuts off some weeks into the game, and once it does, gas pumps stop working unless you power them with a generator set up nearby and turned on.

That’s where siphoning comes in: you draw fuel out of other parked cars into a gas can. This is one of the clearest Build 41 vs Build 42 differences. In Build 41, anyone with an empty gas can could siphon fuel from a vehicle. In Build 42, the game adds a realism requirement: you must also carry a Rubber Hose in your inventory, and the “Siphon Gas” option won’t even appear without one. Rubber hoses turn up in garages, mechanic shops, gas-station tool areas, and industrial storage. The hose is only needed for siphoning out of vehicles, not for pouring fuel in or filling at a pump.

Vehicle types and parts

Vehicles fall into three classes: standard, heavy-duty, and sports. Each type tends to spawn in a matching zone, sports cars in wealthier neighborhoods, heavy-duty vehicles near industrial buildings, and standard cars more broadly. The class matters for repairs because every vehicle part also belongs to a class. A heavy-duty window or a sport-class battery cannot be mixed with parts of a different class, so you generally salvage replacement parts from the same type of vehicle.

Vehicle class

Typical spawn zone

Parts compatibility

Standard

General residential / mixed areas

Standard-class parts only

Heavy-duty

Near industrial buildings

Heavy-duty-class parts only

Sports

Wealthy neighborhoods, car lots

Sport-class parts only

Parts also wear out with use, the wiki notes that tires, suspensions, and mufflers gradually degrade as you drive. Driving over zombies damages the car quickly, and backing into them damages the trunk and reduces its storage capacity, and the trunk itself cannot be replaced.

The Mechanics skill: repairing and swapping parts

The Mechanics skill governs repairing and modifying vehicle parts. As your level rises, you can swap and repair more parts with less chance of failing and breaking them. Many parts require specific tools to remove, and to work on a vehicle’s parts at all you generally need the matching Laines auto magazine, unless you took the Mechanic occupation or the Amateur Mechanic trait. The wiki lists three magazines: Laines Standard Auto Manual (standard vehicles), Laines Commercial Auto Manual (heavy-duty), and a sport-vehicle manual. With Amateur Mechanic you still need to read the sport manual, but not the other two.

The numbered Mechanics books (Mechanics I through V) only accelerate XP gain, they don’t unlock anything, the magazines are what grant working knowledge. Some verified level milestones, with the caveat that engine repair scales by vehicle class:

Task

Mechanics level (per wiki / community)

Hot-wire a vehicle

Mechanics 2 (+ Electrical 1)

Remove / install tires (lug wrench)

Around level 2–3

Install or remove a door cleanly

Level 4

Repair a windshield

Level 5

Repair engine (standard / heavy / sport)

Level 4 / 5 / 6

Engine repair consumes spare engine parts, and how much each part restores depends on your Mechanics level, the wiki gives the example that at level 10, roughly 25 spare engine parts will take a standard car’s engine from 0% to 100%. Higher skill when removing and reinstalling tires and brakes also gives a small boost to tire friction and brake force. For where to find the workshops and garages these tools and books spawn in, our Knox County map guide is a useful companion.

Driving basics

Default controls are simple: W accelerates, S brakes and reverses, A and D steer, and Space brakes or cancels cruise control. Holding Shift with W or S sets and adjusts cruise control speed. The dashboard shows a tachometer (engine RPM) and a speedometer (MPH), and status indicators use green for working, orange for damaged or low charge, and red for broken or missing. Press V to open the vehicle radial menu for actions like siphoning, repairs, and toggling lights. Drive carefully, mowing through zombies feels powerful but wrecks your car fast and the noise pulls in more of them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start a car without keys in Project Zomboid?

Yes. With Electrical level 1 and Mechanics level 2 you can use the “Hotwire Engine” option to start any vehicle without a key. There’s a small chance of triggering the car alarm, and higher Electrical skill reduces that chance. Hot-wiring doesn’t damage the car or your tools.

What do I need to siphon gas?

In Build 41 you only need an empty gas can. In Build 42 you also need a Rubber Hose in your inventory, the “Siphon Gas” option won’t appear without one. Stand by the car, open the radial menu (V), and choose Siphon Gas.

Do I need the Mechanic occupation to repair vehicles?

No. Anyone can repair parts after reading the matching Laines auto magazine for that vehicle class. The Mechanic occupation and the Amateur Mechanic trait give you a head start, but the magazines are what grant the working knowledge, and your Mechanics level determines how reliably repairs succeed.

Pair a reliable car with a solid home base and you can range across the whole map.
