    1. Sharpness V \u2014 Your Default Damage King<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Sharpness is the enchantment you’ll want on almost every sword. It adds extra melee damage to all<\/em> targets using the formula 1 + 0.5 \u00d7 (level \u2212 1)<\/code>, which works out to +1 at I, +2 at III, and a full +3 damage (1.5 hearts) at level V. Since 1.21 it also amplifies your sword’s sweep attack, so it scales up your crowd-clearing too. If you don’t know what you’ll be fighting, Sharpness V is the safe, universal choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. Smite V \u2014 The Boss and Undead Specialist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Smite adds 2.5 \u00d7 level<\/strong> bonus damage against undead mobs \u2014 zombies, skeletons, husks, drowned, strays, phantoms, zoglins, and critically the Wither<\/strong>. At level V that’s a massive +12.5 damage, more than four times Sharpness V’s bonus against those specific targets. Keep a dedicated Smite sword for Wither fights, mob-farm grinding, and Nether trips. The catch: Smite shares the “damage” exclusive group with Sharpness and Bane of Arthropods, so a sword can normally carry only one of the three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    3. Bane of Arthropods V \u2014 Niche but Brutal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Bane of Arthropods mirrors Smite (+2.5 \u00d7 level, up to +12.5 at V) but targets spiders, cave spiders, silverfish, endermites, and bees. It also inflicts Slowness IV on the arthropod, locking it in place. It’s the least-used of the damage trio because arthropods are rarely a real threat, but it’s a lifesaver in silverfish-infested strongholds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    4. Looting III \u2014 More and Better Loot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Looting raises the maximum number of common mob drops by 1 per level (up to +3) and increases the chance of rare and equipment drops by 1 percentage point per level (up to +3%). It does not affect XP. For anyone farming gunpowder, ender pearls, wither skulls, or mob gear, Looting III is non-negotiable \u2014 pair it with a Smite or Sharpness sword for maximum efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    5. Sweeping Edge III \u2014 Crowd Control (Java Only)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Still alive and well in 26.2, Sweeping Edge boosts the damage your sword’s sweep attack deals to the surrounding secondary targets \u2014 up to 3\/4 of your full attack damage at level III (versus 1\/2 at I and 2\/3 at II). It doesn’t change the damage to the mob you directly hit, but it turns your sword into a serious multi-mob weapon. Note this enchantment is Java Edition exclusive and does not exist in Bedrock. Its internal ID was renamed from sweeping<\/code> to sweeping_edge<\/code> back in 1.20.5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    6. Unbreaking III + Mending \u2014 Make It Last Forever<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Unbreaking III gives a 75% chance to skip durability loss on each hit, roughly quadrupling your sword’s lifespan. Mending goes further: while you hold the sword, collected experience orbs repair it at 2 durability per XP point instead of filling your bar. Together they make a sword effectively permanent. Remember that Mending is a treasure enchantment<\/strong> \u2014 it can never come from an enchanting table and must be found as an enchanted book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    7. Fire Aspect II and Knockback II \u2014 Strong Situationals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Fire Aspect sets targets ablaze for 80 fire-ticks (4 seconds) per level \u2014 8 seconds of burn at level II \u2014 adding damage over time and (since 1.21) letting sweep attacks apply the burn too. In 26.2 it even ignites sulfur cubes. Knockback II shoves enemies about 6.724 blocks horizontally, great for PvP and for keeping mobs off ledges, though it can push away mobs you’re trying to farm. Both are excellent picks, just not on every build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    One to avoid: Curse of Vanishing<\/strong> destroys your sword when you die and offers no combat benefit \u2014 never put it on a weapon you care about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How to Apply These Enchantments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Enchanting table:<\/strong> To reach the maximum offered level of 30, surround the table with 15 bookshelves placed one block away with air gaps around it. Each enchant costs 1\u20133 lapis lazuli plus 1\u20133 experience levels; more bookshelves unlock stronger options. Mending and Curse of Vanishing are treasure enchantments and can never<\/em> be rolled here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Anvil combining:<\/strong> Combine a sword with an enchanted book, or two swords of the same type. Two identical enchantments of the same level merge one level higher up to the cap (two Sharpness IV become Sharpness V; two Sharpness V stay V). Incompatible enchantments like Sharpness + Smite can’t coexist \u2014 combining wastes one. Each combine costs XP levels and raises the “prior work penalty” until the item reads “Too Expensive” (above 39 levels in Survival), so plan your order carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
