Endermen also <strong>always drop the block they&#8217;re carrying<\/strong> (100%) if they happen to be holding one.<\/p>\n<h2>What provokes them \u2014 and how to stay safe<\/h2>\n<p>An Enderman turns hostile if you attack it, or if you look directly at its eyes from within 64 blocks (5 game ticks of eye contact in Java). Two defenses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wear a carved pumpkin on your head.<\/strong> You can then look straight at Endermen without provoking them \u2014 essential for moving through The End, where hundreds are watching. The trade-off is a partly-obscured screen.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim at their legs.<\/strong> Keep your crosshair low so you never catch their eyes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Their biggest weakness: water<\/h2>\n<p>Endermen take <strong>0.5 HP of damage from water, rain, and splash water bottles<\/strong> (plus water-filled cauldrons in Bedrock), and they panic-teleport away from it. This makes water a control tool as much as a weapon: fight during rain, stand in shallow water, or throw a splash water bottle to break off a fight that&#8217;s going badly.<\/p>\n<h2>How to fight an Enderman<\/h2>\n<p>The classic trick exploits their <strong>2.9-block height<\/strong>: they need roughly 3 empty blocks to teleport onto your level, so if you tuck into a space only <strong>2 blocks tall<\/strong> \u2014 a doorway, under a slab, or a 2-high pocket you dig into a wall \u2014 the Enderman can&#8217;t teleport to you or hit over the gap. They can hold: sand, red sand, gravel, dirt (and coarse\/rooted dirt), grass block, podzol, mycelium, clay, TNT, cactus, pumpkins, melons, short flowers, mushrooms and fungi, nylium, moss, mud, and a few others. On peaceful builds this griefing is minor, but it&#8217;s worth knowing near sand-based redstone.<\/p>\n<h2>Ender pearls \u2192 reaching The End<\/h2>\n<p>Every pearl feeds your endgame. Combine an <strong>ender pearl + blaze powder<\/strong> to craft an <strong>Eye of Ender<\/strong>, which you throw to locate a Stronghold and then place in the End Portal frame to open it. You&#8217;ll want <strong>at least 12\u201315 pearls<\/strong> before an End run (some break when thrown).
