For new networks, Velocity is usually the better choice — it's faster, more secure, and is officially recommended by the PaperMC team. BungeeCord still makes sense if you have legacy BungeeCord-only plugins, are following BungeeCord tutorials, or specifically want md_5's proxy. Note that Waterfall (Paper's BungeeCord fork) is end-of-life as of 2025 — Paper points all users to Velocity now.

BungeeGuard is a security plugin that prevents the most common BungeeCord vulnerability: players bypassing the proxy by connecting directly to backend Minecraft server ports.
