- Don't Starve Together (DST) is the standalone multiplayer expansion of Don't Starve, developed by Klei Entertainment. While the original is strictly single-player, DST lets up to 6 players (default, configurable higher with adequate server resources) survive together in a procedurally generated world with Tim Burton-esque hand-drawn 2D art.
- DST features unique multiplayer mechanics not found in the original, including collaborative base building through the science machine, alchemy engine, shadow manipulator, and ancient pseudoscience station tech tree. Players must manage sanity, hunger, and health while battling seasonal giants and exploring the cave system together.
- DST dedicated servers use a cluster architecture. The cluster is configured via cluster.ini (master settings like game_mode, max_players, pvp) and requires a cluster_token.txt generated from your Klei account at accounts.klei.com for authentication. Each shard - overworld and caves - has its own server.ini and runs as a separate process on UDP port 10999 by default.
- Caves require a secondary shard, meaning two server instances run simultaneously and communicate with each other. This roughly doubles your RAM needs from 2-4GB (overworld only) to 4-6GB (with caves enabled). Our Standard plan and above handle both shards comfortably with room for mods.
- DST cycles through four seasons - Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer - each with unique survival challenges. Autumn is relatively mild, Winter brings freezing temperatures and Deerclops, Spring has constant rain and Moose/Goose spawning, and Summer causes overheating and wildfires while the Antlion attacks. Bearger arrives in Autumn to raid your food supplies.
- Beyond seasonal giants, endgame raid bosses provide the toughest challenges: the Ancient Fuelweaver in the Ruins, Bee Queen on the surface, Toadstool in the caves, and the Celestial Champion on the Lunar Island. Season lengths and boss spawns are fully configurable in your server's worldgenoverride.lua file.
- DST separates mods into two categories through Steam Workshop. Server mods run on the dedicated server and affect gameplay for all players - adding new items, characters, biomes, or mechanics. Client mods are optional and run on each player's machine for UI improvements, minimap overlays, or visual enhancements.
- Server mods are configured in the dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua file and modsettings.lua within each shard folder. Through our control panel, you can manage which mods your server runs, and players automatically download required server mods when they connect to your world.
- DST features over 20 playable characters, each with unique abilities that encourage diverse team composition. Wilson grows a beard for insulation, Wolfgang has strength-based combat scaling for tanking bosses, Wickerbottom crafts powerful books, WX-78 upgrades with circuits, Wormwood is a plant character who crafts living items, Webber befriends spiders, Warly cooks exclusive dishes with stat bonuses, and Wanda manipulates time with her watches.
- Each character manages sanity, hunger, and health differently, making team diversity a real strategic advantage. For example, a server group might have Wickerbottom for farming, Wolfgang for boss fights, Winona for automated base defenses, and Wurt for merm army management.
- A DST overworld-only server runs well on 2-4GB RAM. Enabling caves doubles this to 4-6GB since the cave shard runs as a separate server process alongside the overworld. Heavy mod usage, higher max_players values, and extensive world exploration all increase RAM requirements further.
- Our Starter plan with 4GB RAM handles overworld-only servers well. For caves, mods, and higher player counts, our Standard plan (8GB) and above provide the headroom you need. If you plan to run popular mod packs like Combined Status, Geometric Placement, and Global Positions alongside caves, 8GB+ is recommended.
- DST offers three game modes: Survival (players become ghosts on death, group can vote to reset the world), Endless (respawn at the Florid Postern with a max-health penalty, world never resets - most popular for public servers), and Wilderness (random spawn locations, no respawn, most hardcore mode).
- Key cluster.ini settings include max_players (default 6), pvp toggle, pause_when_empty (saves resources when nobody is online), and vote_enabled for in-game voting.
