What is V Rising?
V Rising is a vampire survival action RPG developed by Stunlock Studios. Players awaken as a weakened vampire after centuries of slumber and must hunt for blood, gather resources, and rebuild their power in the gothic open world of Vardoran. The game blends real-time combat with base building, crafting, and exploration across a sprawling map filled with mythical creatures, hostile humans, and rival vampires. Released in May 2022, V Rising has sold millions of copies and continues to receive major content updates.
Vampire Survival Action RPG
V Rising sets itself apart from other survival games with its vampire-themed mechanics. Players must avoid sunlight during the day, feed on blood to sustain themselves and gain temporary powers, and master an arsenal of vampiric abilities. Combat uses precise WASD movement with cursor-based aiming -- there is no click-to-move. You aim skill shots, dodge projectiles, and chain abilities together in fast-paced encounters against both AI bosses and other players. - V Rising features six blood types -- Creature, Warrior, Rogue, Brute, Scholar, and Worker -- each granting different combat and survival bonuses. The strength of these bonuses scales with blood quality percentage, so feeding on a 90% Scholar gives far better spell power and cooldown reduction than a 30% one. On a dedicated server, you can adjust blood quality spawn rates in ServerGameSettings.json to make high-quality blood more or less common, directly shaping how powerful players can become and how competitive PvP encounters feel.
- V Rising dedicated servers support up to 40 players. For a small group of under 10 players, 4GB of RAM handles the server smoothly. Larger servers with 20-40 active players building castles and fighting V Blood bosses benefit from 6-8GB. RAM usage scales primarily with the number of active castles, servants deployed, and crafting stations running rather than just raw player count. Our plans are sized to handle populated V Rising worlds without lag spikes during boss fights or castle raids.
- V Blood bosses are 50+ unique named enemies scattered across the map that serve as the main progression system in V Rising. Each boss drops specific vampire abilities, crafting recipes, and structure blueprints when defeated. For example, defeating Quincey the Bandit King unlocks iron weapons crafting, while Solarus the Immaculate is one of the final endgame challenges. On a dedicated server, bosses respawn on a timer so multiple players or clans can defeat them independently. Server admins can adjust boss difficulty and respawn timers in ServerGameSettings.json to match their community's pace.
- The Castle Heart is the core of every player's castle in V Rising and must be fueled with Blood Essence to keep the castle active. Blood Essence is obtained by killing enemies or using the Blood Press crafting station to convert unsalvageable hearts into essence. If the Castle Heart runs dry, castle walls and structures begin deteriorating and eventually collapse, leaving your loot exposed. On a dedicated server, castle decay rate is configurable in ServerGameSettings.json, and admins can adjust how quickly Blood Essence drains to suit casual players who log in weekly or hardcore groups who play daily.
- V Rising uses two main configuration files. ServerHostSettings.json controls network settings like server name, port, password, max players, and whether the server is listed publicly. ServerGameSettings.json controls all gameplay settings including PvP/PvE mode, sun damage intensity, clan size limits, castle decay rate, resource gathering multipliers, and gear score balancing. The default game port is 9876 UDP. Both files are editable through our control panel's file manager without needing SFTP access.
- Since all players are vampires, exposure to direct sunlight causes rapid damage and can kill you in seconds. During daytime, players must travel using shadows cast by trees, cliffs, and buildings, or stay inside their castle until nightfall. This creates a unique rhythm where nighttime is prime time for exploration, boss hunting, and PvP raids, while daytime is better spent crafting and upgrading your castle interior. Server admins can adjust the day and night cycle length and sun damage intensity in ServerGameSettings.json, letting you create servers where daytime is a brief inconvenience or a genuinely deadly threat that forces strategic planning.
- V Rising does not have official mod support from Stunlock Studios, though some community tools like BepInEx-based mods exist for server-side tweaks such as adjusted loot tables and custom game rules. Regarding crossplay, V Rising is currently PC-only via Steam with no crossplay functionality. The 1.0 release in May 2024 brought the game out of early access with major content additions including the Gloomrot and Ruins of Mortium expansion areas, but cross-platform play has not been implemented.
- V Rising uses a Gear Score system instead of traditional character levels. Your power is determined entirely by the equipment you wear and weapons you carry, not experience points. Crafting better gear at stations like the Blood Press, Sawmill, Grinder, and Furnace raises your Gear Score, which determines which V Blood bosses and map regions you can realistically survive. The Servant system also ties into progression -- you can convert defeated humans into servants who gather resources and defend your castle while you are offline. On a dedicated server, admins can configure Gear Score balancing for PvP to prevent overgeared players from dominating lower-tier areas.
