We will show you how XGamingServer makes it easier for you to set up a CS:GO server without the many configurations and technical knowhow
Hosting your own CS:GO server on a Virtual Private Server (VPS) offers full control over your competitive gaming environment, allowing you to configure tick rates, game modes, player access, and install plugins like SourceMod and MetaMod. This guide walks you through setting up your own CS:GO dedicated server.
Before you begin, ensure you have access to a VPS with Ubuntu or a similar Linux distribution installed. You will also need root access or privileges to execute commands via sudo.
ssh your_username@your_vps_ip
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -ysudo apt install lib32gcc-s1 lib32stdc++6 -ymkdir ~/steamcmd && cd ~/steamcmdwget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steamcmd_linux.tar.gztar -xvzf steamcmd_linux.tar.gz
./steamcmd.shlogin anonymousforce_install_dir ~/csgo-serverapp_update 740 validatequit
sudo ufw allow 27015/tcpsudo ufw allow 27015/udpsudo ufw allow 27020/udpsudo ufw enable
Generate a Game Server Login Token (GSLT) at the Steam Game Server Account Management page, then start the server with your preferred tick rate and game mode configuration.
To join your server, open the CS:GO console and type connect your_server_ip:27015. Your server will also appear in the community server browser if you have a valid GSLT configured.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) is the fourth installment in the Counter-Strike franchise, developed by Valve Corporation and Hidden Path Entertainment. Released in August 2012, CS:GO quickly became the defining competitive first-person shooter of its era, building on the foundation laid by Counter-Strike 1.6 and Counter-Strike: Source. The game pits two teams against each other -- Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists -- in round-based objective gameplay. The Terrorist side aims to plant a bomb at designated sites or eliminate the opposing team, while Counter-Terrorists work to defuse the bomb, rescue hostages, or eliminate all Terrorists. With its emphasis on precise aim, tactical positioning, economy management, and team coordination, CS:GO carved out a permanent place at the top of competitive gaming for over a decade.
CS:GO is widely regarded as one of the most important competitive FPS titles ever made. It served as the backbone of the esports scene throughout the 2010s, with Major Championships drawing millions of viewers worldwide and prize pools reaching into the millions of dollars. Professional organizations like Astralis, Natus Vincere, and FaZe Clan built their reputations through CS:GO competition. The game popularized concepts that are now standard across competitive shooters, including the economy system where teams earn money based on round performance, the buy-round and eco-round strategic layer, and the emphasis on utility usage with smoke grenades, flashbangs, molotovs, and HE grenades. Valve's matchmaking system introduced skill groups that became a universal reference point for player skill, and third-party platforms like FACEIT and ESEA provided 128-tick competitive environments for players seeking the highest level of play.
Beyond competitive matchmaking, CS:GO thrived thanks to its vibrant community server ecosystem. Players created and hosted servers running custom game modes including Surf, KZ (climb), Deathmatch, Retake, Execute, Hide and Seek, Jailbreak, Zombie Escape, and countless others. The Steam Workshop integration allowed map creators to share their work easily, and the modding community produced thousands of custom maps for both competitive and casual play. SourceMod and MetaMod provided powerful server-side plugin frameworks that let server operators customize nearly every aspect of gameplay, from admin tools and anti-cheat systems to entirely new game mechanics. This rich modding ecosystem kept the game fresh and engaging for players of all skill levels and interests, and remains a major reason why dedicated CS:GO servers continue to be popular even after the release of Counter-Strike 2.
In September 2023, Valve released Counter-Strike 2 as a free upgrade that replaced CS:GO on Steam. Built on the Source 2 engine, CS2 introduced sub-tick networking, volumetric smoke grenades, updated visuals, and redesigned maps. However, CS:GO retains a dedicated following among players who prefer its established mechanics, grenade lineups, and the classic Source engine feel. Many community servers continue to run CS:GO specifically because of the mature plugin ecosystem, the extensive library of custom maps, and the stable 128-tick server experience that competitive players know and trust. For players and communities that want to maintain access to the original CS:GO experience with full server customization, hosting a dedicated CS:GO server remains the best option. XGamingServer provides the high-performance hardware needed to run CS:GO servers at 128-tick with low latency, ensuring the competitive integrity that made the game legendary.
