## FAQ

### How do forced wipes work in Rust, and can I run my own wipe schedule?

Facepunch enforces a mandatory map wipe on the first Thursday of every month when a new Rust update drops. All servers, including yours, must wipe the map at that point. Blueprint wipes are optional and up to you as the server owner. Beyond the forced monthly wipe, you can set your own additional wipe schedule (e.g., biweekly or weekly) through server.cfg or our control panel to keep gameplay fresh for your community.

### What Oxide/uMod plugins should I install on my Rust server?

Rust uses the Oxide/uMod plugin framework (not mods like some other games). Popular plugins include Gather Manager for adjusting resource rates, Kits for starter or VIP loadouts, Teleport for player teleportation, Shop for in-game economies, Clans for group management, and Rust:IO for a live web map. You can install plugins through our control panel or upload them via SFTP to the oxide/plugins directory. All our plans support unlimited Oxide plugins.

### How much RAM does a Rust server need for my player count?

Rust is resource-intensive compared to most survival games. For a small group of 50 players on a default-size map (4500 world size), 8GB RAM is a solid starting point. For community servers running 100-200 players, 12-16GB is recommended. Larger maps (size 5000-6000) or heavily modded servers with many Oxide plugins will need more resources. Our plans scale from 8GB to 32GB to fit any server size.

### Can I use a custom map or change the procedural map seed?

Yes. Rust generates procedural maps using a seed number combined with a world size setting (default 4500, configurable from 1000 to 6000). You can change the seed in server.cfg to get a completely different map layout while keeping the same size. Alternatively, you can upload custom maps built with Rust Edit through our control panel or via SFTP. Custom maps let you design exact monument placement, terrain, and base locations.

### How do I manage my Rust server remotely with RCON?

Rust includes built-in RCON (Remote Console) support for server administration. RCON runs on your server's game port plus one (e.g., if your server is on the default port 28015, RCON is on 28016). You can connect using tools like RustAdmin or WebRCON to run console commands, ban players, change settings, and monitor server performance in real time without needing to be logged into the game.

### What server settings can I customize in Rust's server.cfg?

Rust's server.cfg gives you control over nearly every gameplay variable. Key settings include gather rate multipliers, craft speed, upkeep cost multipliers for base maintenance, decay rate for abandoned structures, team size limits, and map size/seed. You can also configure EAC (Easy Anti-Cheat) enforcement, set maximum player counts (typically 50-500 depending on resources), and control the tech tree and workbench tier progression system.

### Does Rust support crossplay between PC and consoles?

No. PC Rust (the Steam version hosted on our servers) and Console Edition are completely separate games with no crossplay between them. Console Edition is developed by Double Eleven and runs on different servers. Our hosting is for the PC version by Facepunch Studios, which is the original and most actively updated version of Rust with the largest player base and full Oxide plugin support.

### What monuments and PvE content can players access on my server?

Rust maps include a variety of monuments that provide loot, puzzles, and PvE encounters. Major monuments include Launch Site, Military Tunnels, Oil Rig (small and large), Cargo Ship, Arctic Research Base, and Train Yard, among many others. The number and type of monuments depend on your map size setting. Larger maps (size 4500+) generate more monuments. Custom maps let you place monuments exactly where you want them for a tailored server experience.
