About Minecraft Skins

Minecraft skins are 64×64 pixel PNG texturesthat wrap around your character model. Every player in Java Edition can pick their own skin — and thanks to the Mojang API, anyone's current skin is publicly viewable.

There are two models: Classic (Steve, 4-pixel arms) and Slim (Alex, 3-pixel arms). This viewer auto-detects which one a player uses. Capes are awarded to MineCon attendees, translators, Mojang staff, and a handful of partner accounts.

Drag on the 3D model to rotate it manually, or pick a walking / running / flying animation to see how the skin looks in motion. Download the skin PNG to use it yourself, or use the "Use This Skin" button to apply it directly via minecraft.net (requires you to be logged in).

What You Can Do With This Skin Viewer

This is a full 3D Minecraft skin viewer and editor preview tool. Enter any Java Edition player's username to see their current skin rendered on a live character model — rotate with drag, zoom with scroll, and pick between walking, running, flying, or idle animations.

Skin designers can upload their own PNG (64×64 standard or 64×32 legacy) to preview what a custom skin will look like before applying it in-game. Upload a cape PNG too, or enable elytra mode to see the texture as elytra wings. Advanced controls let you toggle each body-part layer (inner base vs outer overlay like hair, jacket, pants), tweak FOV and lighting, add a floating name tag, and drop in a custom panorama background.

Compare Mode shows two players' skins side by side — useful for YouTubers building thumbnail references, server admins settling debates, or just comparing the Dream SMP cast. The Screenshot button captures the current 3D pose as a PNG you can share directly.

Data comes from the official Mojang API (api.mojang.com + sessionserver.mojang.com). Skin textures are served from textures.minecraft.net — same as the official launcher uses. This tool works for Java Edition only. Bedrock Edition uses a separate Microsoft/Xbox Live skin system that isn't publicly queryable.

Minecraft Skin Viewer — FAQ

How does the Minecraft Skin Viewer work?

Enter a Minecraft Java Edition username. The tool queries the official Mojang API, finds that player's current skin texture URL, and renders it on a 3D character model using skinview3d (WebGL). You can rotate the model, zoom in, and cycle between walking, running, flying, and idle animations.

Can I download someone's Minecraft skin?

Yes. Each skin is a publicly available 64x64 PNG texture served by Mojang's own servers. Click the Download Skin button to save the PNG — you can then upload it to your own Minecraft launcher, edit it in any image editor, or use it as a reference.

What's the difference between Steve (Classic) and Alex (Slim)?

Classic/Steve has 4-pixel-wide arms; Slim/Alex has 3-pixel-wide arms. Each player picks one in their Minecraft launcher. Some skins only look right on one model — our viewer auto-detects which one that player uses.

Does this work for Bedrock Edition players?

No. This viewer uses the Java Edition Mojang API. Bedrock (Pocket/Xbox/PlayStation/Switch) uses a different skin system tied to Xbox Live — skins are not publicly queryable the same way.

Why does this player have a cape?

Capes in Minecraft are rewards: MineCon attendee capes (from conventions 2011-2016), translator capes, Mojang developer capes, and Minecraft Dungeons / Migrator capes. They can't be purchased or traded.

Can I use this skin on my own account?

Click "Use This Skin" to open minecraft.net's skin upload page with the URL pre-filled. You'll need to be logged into your Microsoft account. You can also download the PNG and upload it manually in the launcher.

Why does the skin load slowly sometimes?

The 3D renderer uses WebGL and loads Three.js bundle (~500KB). First load is a bit slower; subsequent views cache the library. The skin texture itself loads fast directly from Mojang's textures CDN.

Can I share the URL with someone?

Yes — use the Copy Share Link button. The URL includes the username so the recipient sees the same player's skin. Great for Reddit, Discord, or Twitter.
