How This Enchantment Calculator Works
Pick the Minecraft item you want to enchant — sword, pickaxe, armor piece, bow, trident, mace, fishing rod, or an enchanted book. The tool instantly shows every enchantment that's valid for that item, with their max levels, rarity weights, and conflict rules.
Select the enchantments you want. Conflicts (like Sharpness + Smite, or Silk Touch + Fortune) are flagged in red so you can't build an invalid combo. The Max All button auto-fills the best-possible stack — Sharpness V, Unbreaking III, Mending, and any item-specific additions — without conflicts.
The calculator then computes the optimal anvil combining order. Minecraft's anvil charges XP based on enchantment weight × level plus a prior-work penalty that doubles each time an item is combined. We try all merge orders and pick the cheapest path, flagging any step that exceeds the 39-level survival cap.
All data is sourced directly from PrismarineJS/minecraft-data (Java 1.21.4 canonical definitions) and the Minecraft Wiki anvil mechanics page. Every max level, weight, and XP multiplier matches the live game.

How does the Minecraft Enchantment Calculator work?
Pick your item (sword, pickaxe, armor, etc.), select the enchantments you want at the levels you want, and the calculator shows you which are compatible, flags conflicts (e.g. Sharpness vs Smite, Silk Touch vs Fortune), and computes the optimal anvil combining order to minimize XP level cost.
What's the maximum XP cost on an anvil?
In survival mode, any single anvil combine that costs 40 or more levels is rejected — the anvil shows 'Too Expensive!'. The calculator warns you if your plan exceeds this 39-level cap so you can break it into smaller merges or skip low-value enchantments.
Which Minecraft enchantments conflict with each other?
Protection / Fire Protection / Blast Protection / Projectile Protection are mutually exclusive (pick one). Sharpness / Smite / Bane of Arthropods conflict on weapons. Silk Touch conflicts with Fortune. Infinity conflicts with Mending on bows. Loyalty conflicts with Riptide on tridents. Depth Strider conflicts with Frost Walker on boots.
Does this calculator support Minecraft 1.21 (The Tricky Trials)?
Yes — 1.21 enchantments are included: Density, Breach, and Wind Burst for the Mace, plus existing enchantments updated for the current version. Swift Sneak (from ancient cities) and Wind Burst are marked as treasure enchantments.
How do I get Mending in Minecraft?
Mending is a treasure enchantment — you cannot get it from an enchantment table. Sources: trading with librarian villagers, fishing (with Luck of the Sea), loot chests in dungeons/temples/stronghold/end cities, or raid loot. Librarian trading is the most reliable — build a villager breeder and reroll trades for a Mending book.
