Plan the perfect Project Zomboid Build 42 character

Every Project Zomboid run starts with the same choice: occupation + traits. Build 42 reworked the crafting system completely (Knapping, Pottery, Masonry, Blacksmithing, Welding, Glassmaking) and added animal husbandry (Animal Care, Butchering, Tracking), which means a lot of traits and occupations you knew from Build 41 were rebalanced, renamed, or brand new. This planner covers the current B42 data — 93 traits and 26 occupations.

Pick your occupation from the dropdown. Unemployed still gets +8 free points. New B42 occupations include Blacksmith (Metalworking/Short Blade + Blacksmithing bonus + free Blacksmith Knowledge), Welder (Welding/Electrical), Livestock Farmer (Animal Care + Butchering), Crop Farmer (Agriculture, the renamed Farming skill), Tailor, and DIY Expert (the old Repairman). Veteran, Police Officer, Fire Officer, Carpenter, Chef, Nurse, Security Guard, Park Ranger are still here — several with updated skill bonuses (Park Ranger now grants Tracking; Chef grants Butchering).

Positive traits cost points (Strong -10, Athletic -10). Negative traits refund points (Weak +10, Overweight +6). B42 added new positive traits — Keen Cook, Artisan, Mason, Whittler, Inventive, Crafty, Wilderness Knowledge — that give bonuses to the new crafting skills. It also replaced a few B41 traits: Pacifist → Reluctant Fighter, Asthmatic → Short of Breath, Axeman → Ax-pert. Amateur Mechanic is now occupation-only (Mechanic gets it free). All the classic conflict groups still enforce (Strong/Weak, Athletic/Unfit, Eagle Eyed/Short Sighted, etc.).

Your build must end at 0 points or more to be valid. The point counter turns green when you have points banked, red when over budget, grey when balanced. Export your build as text to share in Discord or paste into your server's rules channel.

Project Zomboid Character Build Planner — FAQ

How many free points do I start with in Project Zomboid Build 42?

Unemployed starts with +8 free points. Every other occupation costs points (usually 1-8) or gives a smaller bonus. Those points are your trait budget — subtract positive trait costs, add negative trait refunds. Net must be ≥ 0 for the game to accept your build.

What's the best occupation in Build 42?

Depends on playstyle. Veteran is still the combat king (Aiming 3, Reloading 2, free Desensitized). Blacksmith + free Blacksmith Knowledge is the new pick for smithing builds. Livestock Farmer gives Animal Care + Butchering for homestead servers. DIY Expert (replaces Repairman) grants the most crafting-skill coverage for generalist players. Unemployed still gives max trait flexibility with +8 free points.

What changed in Build 42 vs Build 41 traits?

Pacifist → Reluctant Fighter, Asthmatic → Short of Breath, Axeman → Ax-pert (renamed). Amateur Mechanic is now occupation-only (Mechanic gets it free). Costs rebalanced: Eagle Eyed 6→4, Low Thirst 6→2, Adrenaline Junkie 8→4. New positive traits for the reworked crafting: Keen Cook, Artisan, Mason, Whittler, Inventive, Crafty, Wilderness Knowledge.

Which negative traits should I take in Build 42?

Solid refunds: Smoker (+4, just carry cigarettes), Weak Stomach (+3, skip spoiled food), Hearty Appetite (+4, eat more), Slow Reader (+2, books slower), Reluctant Fighter (+2, combat skills level slower — fine if non-melee focused). Avoid: Short of Breath, Obese, Hemophobic, Unlucky, Short Sighted — they hurt core survival mechanics.

Do traits work the same on a Project Zomboid server?

Yes — PZ sandbox settings can adjust XP multipliers and loot rarity but don't change trait costs or effects. On an XGamingServer-hosted Project Zomboid Build 42 server, your build is the same whether you play solo or multiplayer. Mods (Simple Overhaul: Traits, More Traits) can add extra traits; this planner shows vanilla B42 only.
