Rust Gunpowder Calculator
Convert sulfur and charcoal into exact gunpowder, then into rockets, C4, explosive 5.56, or F1 grenades. The calculator shows you the raw materials to farm for any ammo target — including furnace time and mixing-table count.

Smelting Efficiency Notes
- • Small Furnace: 6 wood slots + 18 ore slots. 2.5s per ore smelt.
- • Large Furnace: 15 slots total, faster throughput for bulk runs. Costs 100 wood + 50 stone to build.
- • Wood → Charcoal ratio: ~0.75 charcoal per wood burned. Some wood is consumed without producing charcoal.
- • Bulk farming: 3 large furnaces + bulk sulfur runs from Dome/Military Tunnels/Launch Site is the standard pre-raid pipeline.
How the Rust Gunpowder Calculator Works
Gunpowder is the foundation of Rust's explosive economy. 1 crafted gunpowder = 1 sulfur + 30 charcoal at a mixing table. Rockets, C4, explo ammo, F1 grenades, and beancan grenades all start here — knowing the exact gunpowder-per-explosive cost is the difference between raiding tonight and running out mid-raid.
Enter how many rockets, C4, or explo ammo you want and the calculator tells you the raw sulfur + charcoal (and the wood to make that charcoal) to farm. One rocket = 1,400 gunpowder = 1,400 sulfur + 42,000 charcoal. One C4 = 500 gunpowder + 10 explosives + 20 tech trash + 5 cloth.
Charcoal is the sneaky bottleneck. Smelting 1 wood in a small furnace yields 0.75 charcoal on average. A full 30-rocket loadout needs 56,000 charcoal, which is ~75,000 wood smelted — that's why clans set up dedicated charcoal furnaces running 24/7 on wipe day one.
Use the mixing-table estimate to plan your base. One mixing table mixes 10 gunpowder in 2 seconds — one table is enough for small raids, but serious clans run 3+ tables in parallel to hit the numbers the calc shows you.
Rust Gunpowder Calculator — FAQ
How much sulfur per gunpowder in Rust?
One gunpowder = 1 sulfur + 30 charcoal at a mixing table. Ten gunpowder = 10 sulfur + 300 charcoal. This is the base conversion ratio the calculator uses for all explosive crafting.
How many gunpowder in a rocket?
One rocket craft uses 1,400 gunpowder + 100 metal pipe + 150 metal frags. That's 1,400 sulfur + 42,000 charcoal just for the gunpowder component of a single rocket.
How do I farm charcoal efficiently in Rust?
Burn wood in any furnace — 1 wood smelts to ~0.75 charcoal on average. Set up 2-3 small furnaces with full wood stacks running 24/7 for the best sustained rate. A campfire also works but is slower.
Is gunpowder tradeable or does it have to be crafted?
Gunpowder is tradeable player-to-player and via Outpost vending machines (usually ~8 scrap per 10 gunpowder). For raid-scale quantities it's always cheaper to craft it yourself if you have the sulfur.
