Sulfur is the lifeblood of raiding in Rust — every explosive traces back to it, and a raid is really a sulfur budget. This guide covers where to farm sulfur, smelting it, crafting gunpowder, and turning gunpowder into the explosives that win raids.
Farming sulfur
Sulfur comes from the bright-yellow sulfur nodes, mined with a pickaxe or jackhammer, and in bulk from a Mining Quarry placed on a sulfur deposit (found by throwing a Survey Charge). Late wipe, a running sulfur quarry is what funds a raid — solos farm nodes, groups run quarries. Sulfur fields concentrate in the arid and desert parts of the map.
Smelt ore into sulfur
Sulfur ore smelts into refined sulfur in any furnace, exactly like metal. You’ll also need plenty of charcoal — the by-product of burning wood in your furnaces — so keep furnaces running to bank charcoal while you smelt.
Crafting gunpowder
Gunpowder is crafted from sulfur + charcoal. It’s the base ingredient for explosives and explosive ammo, and crafting it in bulk is the real bottleneck before any raid. From gunpowder you make Explosives, then C4, rockets, satchel charges and explosive ammo.
