Optimize Terraria NPC happiness, fast
Terraria's 1.4 happiness system adds a price multiplier to every NPC shop based on their biome + who they live with. Happy NPCs (≤85% price = Ecstatic) sell Pylons — the fast-travel items that let you teleport between biomes. Unhappy NPCs charge up to 150% and refuse to sell pylons at all. Getting the happiness math right is the fastest way to unlock Universal Pylon travel and slash your shop costs.
Pick any of the 27 town NPCs (Guide through Princess, plus Santa Claus and Old Man for reference). Select a biome — the calculator shows if this NPC loves, likes, dislikes, or hates it. Add up to 3 roommates (NPCs within 25 tiles). Each factor applies a multiplier: loved 0.88×, liked 0.94×, disliked 1.06×, hated 1.12×. The final price multiplier is the product of biome × every roommate × crowding factor, clamped to 75%-150%.
Crowding matters too. Solitary (0 NPCs within 120 tiles) = 0.9× bonus. Cozy (1-2 nearby) = 0.95×. Normal (3 nearby) = 1.0×. Crowded (4+) adds +4% per extra NPC. The "extra NPCs nearby" slider lets you set how many non-roommate NPCs are within that 120-tile radius.
Auto-suggestions: the calculator lists every biome this NPC likes or loves (ranked by discount), and every NPC they prefer as a roommate. Click any suggestion to apply it instantly and see the new price. Combine the best biome + two loved roommates alone in a 120-tile radius and most NPCs hit the Ecstatic 75% floor — which guarantees pylon access and max shop discount.
Notable preferences (1.4.4 current): Princess loves EVERYONE (no dislikes, no hates — she's the universal happy neighbor for any desperate town). Truffle is the only NPC with a "loved" biome (Mushroom) — Truffle requires a Mushroom biome anyway so he's always ecstatic. Santa Claus loves Snow + hates Desert but only spawns Dec 15-31. Most NPCs have simpler like/dislike biome preferences (no strongest-tier love/hate).
Terraria NPC Happiness Calculator — FAQ
What price multiplier do I need for pylons?
NPCs sell pylons when their price multiplier is ≤85% (i.e. Ecstatic). The exact threshold is 85% or better, meaning the NPC must have a 15%+ discount from biome + roommate + crowding combined. At 90% or above, pylons are locked.
How many NPCs can share one room?
Mechanically no limit, but only NPCs within 25 tiles count as "roommates" for happiness. NPCs 25-120 tiles apart count for CROWDING but not for roommate preferences. Best practice: put 2 NPCs who love each other in one house (both get roommate bonus), then separate house pairs by more than 120 tiles to avoid crowding penalty.
Which NPC is the universal happy neighbor?
Princess (unlocked after all other NPCs have moved in at least once). She loves EVERY other NPC and no one hates being near her. Put Princess in the same biome as a problem NPC and she instantly gives them a 12% discount. Doesn't help HER happiness much but she's your tool for salvaging difficult pairings.
Which biomes are neutral for most NPCs?
The Cavern, Underground, and Dungeon biomes have essentially no preference data (no NPCs love/hate them). Only Truffle (Loves Mushroom) and Santa Claus (Loves Snow, Hates Desert) have the strongest tier — every other NPC only has like/dislike at ±6%.
What's the minimum distance between NPC houses to avoid crowding?
More than 120 tiles. So build two happy houses at least 121 tiles apart and they won't impact each other's crowding factor. Easy hack: use teleporters between houses for convenience, not proximity. Pylons themselves only unlock once one house is Ecstatic, so you need at least one tightly-optimized home first.
