Quick answer: Since the 1.18 Caves & Cliffs update, every ore in Minecraft has its own best Y level. Diamonds and redstone peak at Y=-59, gold at Y=-16, lapis at Y=0, copper at Y=48, coal at Y=96, and iron has huge deposits up in the mountains (peak Y=232). Set your F3 coordinates to the right depth and you’ll mine far more efficiently. Try our Minecraft ore distribution tool for the full interactive chart.
The 1.18 update stretched the world from Y=-64 to Y=320 and gave every ore a “triangle” distribution — each one is most common at a specific depth and tapers off above and below it. Mining at the peak level for what you want is the single biggest efficiency gain in the game. Here’s the full breakdown.
Best Y Level for Every Ore
| Ore | Best Y level | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond | -59 | Sweet spot Y-59 to -54; more common the deeper you go (avoid lava at bedrock) |
| Redstone | -59 | Like diamond, most common at the bottom of the world |
| Lapis Lazuli | 0 | Peaks around Y=0; a second “buried” batch spreads deeper |
| Gold | -16 | Badlands biomes also have tons of gold near the surface (Y32-256) |
| Copper | 48 | Even more common in Dripstone Caves |
| Iron | 16 or 232 | Underground peak Y=16; enormous deposits high in mountains (peak Y=232) |
| Coal | 96 | Common near the surface and in mountains; rare below Y=0 |
| Emerald | 224 | Mountain biomes ONLY (Jagged/Frozen/Stony Peaks, Meadow); peaks high up |
| Ancient Debris | 15 | In the Nether only; best netherite level (blast-mine, watch for lava) |
The Best Levels to Mine
- Y=-59 is the golden depth. Both diamonds and redstone peak here, and lapis and gold aren’t far above — so a mining tunnel at Y=-59 to -54 gives you the best all-round haul. Press F3 to see your current Y coordinate.
- Iron has two homes. There’s a reliable underground peak around Y=16, but the richest iron is in exposed mountain deposits up around Y=232 — huge blobs you can strip-mine on the surface.
- Emerald is mountains-only. Don’t dig deep for it — emerald ore generates almost exclusively in mountain biomes, and it peaks high up around Y=224. Mine the exposed stone on peaks.
- Copper loves Dripstone Caves. It peaks at Y=48 everywhere, but Dripstone Caves have noticeably more of it.
- Gold has a shortcut. Regular gold peaks at Y=-16, but Badlands (Mesa) biomes have gold generating in massive quantities near the surface — the fastest gold in the game.
Efficient Mining Tips
- Strip-mine at the peak level. Dig long straight tunnels at the best Y for your target ore rather than mining randomly.
- Use Fortune III. A Fortune pickaxe multiplies diamond, redstone, lapis, coal, copper, and emerald drops — always mine those with it.
- Bring the right pickaxe. Iron gets you most ores; you need a diamond (or netherite) pickaxe to mine ancient debris.
- Watch for lava. Diamond level is right above the lava layer — carry a water bucket and blocks.

FAQ
What is the best Y level for diamonds?
Y=-59. Diamonds get more common the deeper you go and peak at the bottom of the world, with the sweet spot being Y-59 to -54 (just above the lava/bedrock layer).
What Y level is best for iron?
Iron has an underground peak around Y=16, but the largest deposits are in mountain biomes up around Y=232, where huge iron blobs are exposed on the surface.
Where do I find emeralds?
Emerald ore only generates in mountain biomes (Jagged Peaks, Frozen Peaks, Stony Peaks, Meadow, Windswept Hills) and peaks high up around Y=224. You won’t find it by digging deep elsewhere.
