Minecraft Woodland Mansion Guide: Totems, Secret Rooms and Loot

The Woodland Mansion is one of the rarest and most dangerous structures in Minecraft — a sprawling three-floor manor deep in the dark forest, guarded by illagers and home to the only naturally spawning source of the Totem of Undying. This guide covers how to find one, the mobs inside, every secret room, and the best loot.

How to find a Woodland Mansion

Mansions generate rarely in dark forest (and pale garden) biomes, usually thousands of blocks from spawn. There are two reliable ways to locate one:

  1. Woodland Explorer Map: trade with a cartographer villager (journeyman level) for a woodland explorer map. It marks the nearest mansion — though “nearest” can still be a long journey.
  2. /locate structure mansion if cheats are enabled (great for testing on your own server).

Because mansions are so far out, come prepared: food, a bed, boats for ocean crossings, and combat gear.

Structure overview

Mansions span three floors of randomly generated rooms connected by a grand foyer and staircase. Rooms range from bedrooms and dining halls to hidden vaults. Low interior lighting means normal hostile mobs (spiders, skeletons, zombies) can spawn inside on top of the illagers.

The mobs: illagers

Mob Where Threat / drop
Vindicator Throughout, especially first floor Fast iron-axe melee; hits hard
Evoker Second floor and above, in large rooms Summons vexes + fang attacks; drops the Totem of Undying
Vex Summoned by evokers Flying, phases through walls
Allay Jail cells, guarded by vindicators Friendly — free it to collect/duplicate items

The Totem of Undying is the prize: hold it in your off-hand and it revives you from a fatal hit, restoring health. Every evoker drops one when killed, so a mansion can yield several. Once killed, vindicators and evokers do not respawn.

Secret rooms and loot

Mansions hide themed secret rooms — finding them is half the fun:

Secret room What’s inside
Lava room A Block of Diamond in a glass case (rarest room)
Obsidian room A concealed Block of Diamond
Illager statue room A Block of Lapis Lazuli hidden in the statue’s head
Tree-chopping room An Iron Axe with Efficiency I
Spider room A cave-spider spawner (danger, no reward)
Fake End Portal room A trapped chest with ender pearls — beware traps
Attic Multiple chests (most common loot rooms)

General mansion chests can contain enchanted gear, diamonds, iron, tools, and food. Check any enchanted drops against our enchantment calculator.

How to raid a mansion safely

  1. Clear room by room — don’t rush into large rooms where multiple evokers can gang up.
  2. Bring a shield to block vindicator axe hits and evoker fangs.
  3. Light up cleared rooms with torches to stop extra mobs spawning behind you.
  4. Keep a Totem of Undying in your off-hand as soon as you get one.
  5. Break walls to hunt secret rooms — the diamond and lapis blocks are worth it.

Java vs Bedrock

  • Bedrock: mansions can generate slightly differently and allays spawn in jail cells the same way.
  • Java: evokers reliably drop one Totem of Undying each; room layouts are randomized.

FAQ

Is the Totem of Undying only from mansions? Evokers also spawn during raids in villages, so that’s a second source — but mansions are the guaranteed natural spawn.

How far is the nearest mansion? Often several thousand blocks. A cartographer’s explorer map is the fastest way to pin one down.

Do mansion mobs respawn? No — once you clear the vindicators and evokers, they’re gone, though normal mobs can still spawn in dark rooms.
