Hostile Mob Spawn Rules (1.21)

• Mob cap: 70 hostile mobs per player, pooled per dimension within simulation distance. More players = proportionally more spawns.
• Spawn radius: mobs spawn between 24 and 128 blocks from any player. Outside the inner 24-block radius you can stand without blocking spawns.
• Despawn: >128 blocks = instant despawn. 32-128 blocks = 2.5% chance per tick to despawn after being alive 30 seconds.
• Light level: since 1.18, all hostile mobs require light level 0 to spawn (previously was 7). Full darkness is mandatory.
• Spawn surface: opaque full block top, 2 blocks of air above, no transparent blocks (glass, leaves).
• AFK in spawn chunks: world spawn chunks (17×17 around 0,0) are always loaded. Move further than 128 blocks away from them when AFKing at a farm.
• Enderman farm in End: stand on an endstone pillar 100+ blocks above the main island — no other valid spawn surfaces exist, so ALL spawns go to your killing floor. Up to 200k XP/hr with optimized design.
