Music Discs & Goat Horns in Minecraft — Reference Guide
Music Discs
Music discs are playable items that produce unique audio tracks when inserted into a jukebox. Place a jukebox, right-click with a disc to start playback, and right-click again (or use a comparator) to eject it. The jukebox broadcasts a comparator signal whose strength corresponds to the specific disc inserted — useful for redstone contraptions. Note that jukeboxes play actual music tracks, not note block pitches; note blocks themselves cannot reproduce disc audio.
Twelve of the original discs (13 through Wait) are all obtainable the same way: found in dungeon or bastion remnant chests, or dropped when a skeleton kills a creeper — the creeper drops whichever disc the RNG selects at that moment. The newer discs each have unique sources: Pigstep appears exclusively in bastion chests, Otherside spawns rarely in stronghold or dungeon chests, disc 5 must be crafted from nine disc fragments recovered from ancient city chests, Relic comes from brushing suspicious gravel in trail ruins, and Creator, Creator (Music Box), and Precipice are found inside trial chamber vaults.
On a server, /give is the quickest way to hand out discs for events, adventure maps, or testing custom jukeboxes without farming creeper kills. The command format is straightforward: /give <target> minecraft:<disc_id> 1.
Goat Horns
Goat horns were added in Java Edition 1.19 and produce a loud, far-carrying sound that can be heard up to 256 blocks away — handy for coordinating players on large servers. In survival, a goat rams a solid block (logs, stone, walls, etc.) and has a chance to drop 0–2 horns of a random instrument variant. Each goat can drop at most two horns total across its lifetime; after that it is hornless. Screaming goats — a ~2 % natural spawn variant — always drop the Dream horn, which produces an eerie, high-pitched cry distinct from the seven regular tones.
Starting in Java Edition 1.20.5, the game uses the data component system for goat horns. The minecraft:instrument="minecraft:<instrument_id>" component embedded in the /give command tells the game which sound to play. Older NBT syntax ({Instrument:"…"}) no longer works in current versions.
Using /give on Your Server
/give requires operator permissions (OP level 2 or above by default in vanilla). On servers running plugins such as LuckPerms, you can grant individual players the minecraft.command.give permission node without giving full OP access. Music discs and goat horns are both stackable to one, so a single /give @a minecraft:music_disc_cat 1 will hand one disc to every online player — useful for themed events. Combine with /effect and custom /title messages for polished in-game experiences on roleplay or adventure servers.
