How Nether Portal Linking Works

  • 8:1 ratio — 1 block in the Nether = 8 blocks in the Overworld (X and Z only; Y is 1:1).
  • Search radius — when you enter a portal, the game looks for an existing portal within a ±128 block cube at the scaled destination.
  • New portal creation — if nothing's in range, it creates a new portal near the destination coords (prefers same Y).
  • Avoiding collisions — keep Overworld portals at least 1024 blocks apart to guarantee separate Nether portals.
  • Reverse-linking — for precise portal pairs, build BOTH portals manually at the correct scaled coords. The first portal you enter links to the nearest existing portal.
