Minecraft Spawn Eggs — Complete Java Edition Guide

Spawn eggs are special items in Minecraft that instantly spawn a specific mob when used on a surface. In Java Edition, every mob that can be summoned has a corresponding spawn egg — but not all of them can be obtained through normal survival gameplay. Use the /give command above to get any spawn egg on your server instantly.

Survival vs Creative / Command-Only Eggs

Most spawn eggs are exclusive to Creative Mode inventory — you cannot craft them, find them in loot chests, or obtain them through any survival mechanic. The only two eggs that fall into a special “commands only” category are the Ender Dragon and Wither spawn eggs, which do not appear in the Creative inventory at all and can only be obtained via /give. These bosses are designed to be fought once per world (or summoned through their natural mechanic), so their spawn eggs are intentionally locked behind operator commands.

Naturally Spawning vs Always Passive

Some mobs only spawn under specific world conditions — the Warden only emerges when you trigger too many shriekers in Ancient Cities, Phantoms only appear when a player skips sleep for too long, and Zoglins only exist when Hoglins are brought to the Overworld. Spawn eggs bypass all of these conditions, making them essential for server admins who want to populate mob arenas or test behavior without waiting for natural spawning requirements to be met.

Other mobs like Tadpoles, Trader Llamas, and Bogged are new or niche enough that most players never see them in the wild — their spawn eggs let you introduce them to players on demand.

Common Server Admin Uses

• Mob arenas and mini-games — Stock a dispenser with spawn eggs to release waves of enemies (Zombies, Skeletons, Creepers, Blazes) on a timer during PvE events.
• Roleplay and storytelling— Place NPCs using Villager or Wandering Trader eggs, or populate a custom dungeon with mobs that wouldn't normally spawn in that biome.
• Spawn testing and balance — Test mob AI pathing, drops, or custom mechanics during plugin development without waiting for natural spawns.
• Boss events — Use the Wither or Ender Dragon spawn egg to trigger server-wide boss encounters at scheduled times with a command block or plugin hook.
• Mob farms and breeders — Pre-populate an auto-breeder with animals (Chickens, Cows, Pigs) rather than spending time luring them through the world.

Command Reference

All item IDs are for Java Edition 1.21+. Bedrock Edition uses the same spawn egg items but with a different command syntax: /give @p spawn_egg 1 [entity_id]. The Ender Dragon and Wither eggs do not appear in Creative inventory — they require operator permissions and the /give command.
