Best Sword Enchantments in Minecraft (26.2)

A fully enchanted sword is the single biggest jump in combat power you can build in Minecraft, and in Java Edition 26.2 (“Chaos Cubed”) the sword’s enchantment list is exactly the same reliable set it has been since 1.21.x. That means the priorities below are stable, tested, and ready to carry you from your first zombie to the Wither.

This guide ranks every sword-applicable enchantment in 26.2, gives you the exact damage and durability numbers behind each one, and shows you how to apply them at the enchanting table, on the anvil, or with the /enchant command. 1. Sharpness V — Your Default Damage King

Sharpness is the enchantment you’ll want on almost every sword. It adds extra melee damage to all targets using the formula 1 + 0.5 × (level − 1), which works out to +1 at I, +2 at III, and a full +3 damage (1.5 hearts) at level V. Since 1.21 it also amplifies your sword’s sweep attack, so it scales up your crowd-clearing too. If you don’t know what you’ll be fighting, Sharpness V is the safe, universal choice.

2. Smite V — The Boss and Undead Specialist

Smite adds 2.5 × level bonus damage against undead mobs — zombies, skeletons, husks, drowned, strays, phantoms, zoglins, and critically the Wither. At level V that’s a massive +12.5 damage, more than four times Sharpness V’s bonus against those specific targets. Keep a dedicated Smite sword for Wither fights, mob-farm grinding, and Nether trips. The catch: Smite shares the “damage” exclusive group with Sharpness and Bane of Arthropods, so a sword can normally carry only one of the three.

3. Bane of Arthropods V — Niche but Brutal

Bane of Arthropods mirrors Smite (+2.5 × level, up to +12.5 at V) but targets spiders, cave spiders, silverfish, endermites, and bees. It also inflicts Slowness IV on the arthropod, locking it in place. It’s the least-used of the damage trio because arthropods are rarely a real threat, but it’s a lifesaver in silverfish-infested strongholds.

4. Looting III — More and Better Loot

Looting raises the maximum number of common mob drops by 1 per level (up to +3) and increases the chance of rare and equipment drops by 1 percentage point per level (up to +3%). It does not affect XP. For anyone farming gunpowder, ender pearls, wither skulls, or mob gear, Looting III is non-negotiable — pair it with a Smite or Sharpness sword for maximum efficiency.

5. Sweeping Edge III — Crowd Control (Java Only)

Still alive and well in 26.2, Sweeping Edge boosts the damage your sword’s sweep attack deals to the surrounding secondary targets — up to 3/4 of your full attack damage at level III (versus 1/2 at I and 2/3 at II). It doesn’t change the damage to the mob you directly hit, but it turns your sword into a serious multi-mob weapon. Note this enchantment is Java Edition exclusive and does not exist in Bedrock. Its internal ID was renamed from sweeping to sweeping_edge back in 1.20.5.

6. Unbreaking III + Mending — Make It Last Forever

Unbreaking III gives a 75% chance to skip durability loss on each hit, roughly quadrupling your sword’s lifespan. Mending goes further: while you hold the sword, collected experience orbs repair it at 2 durability per XP point instead of filling your bar. Together they make a sword effectively permanent. Remember that Mending is a treasure enchantment — it can never come from an enchanting table and must be found as an enchanted book.

7. Fire Aspect II and Knockback II — Strong Situationals

Fire Aspect sets targets ablaze for 80 fire-ticks (4 seconds) per level — 8 seconds of burn at level II — adding damage over time and (since 1.21) letting sweep attacks apply the burn too. In 26.2 it even ignites sulfur cubes. Knockback II shoves enemies about 6.724 blocks horizontally, great for PvP and for keeping mobs off ledges, though it can push away mobs you’re trying to farm. Both are excellent picks, just not on every build.

One to avoid: Curse of Vanishing destroys your sword when you die and offers no combat benefit — never put it on a weapon you care about.

How to Apply These Enchantments

Enchanting table: To reach the maximum offered level of 30, surround the table with 15 bookshelves placed one block away with air gaps around it. Each enchant costs 1–3 lapis lazuli plus 1–3 experience levels; more bookshelves unlock stronger options. Mending and Curse of Vanishing are treasure enchantments and can never be rolled here.

Anvil combining: Combine a sword with an enchanted book, or two swords of the same type. Two identical enchantments of the same level merge one level higher up to the cap (two Sharpness IV become Sharpness V; two Sharpness V stay V). Incompatible enchantments like Sharpness + Smite can’t coexist — combining wastes one. Each combine costs XP levels and raises the “prior work penalty” until the item reads “Too Expensive” (above 39 levels in Survival), so plan your order carefully.

The /enchant command: On a server or in Creative, use /enchant [level] — for example /enchant @s minecraft:sharpness 5 or /enchant @p fire_aspect 2. Enchantment IDs use the minecraft: namespace (e.g. minecraft:sweeping_edge, minecraft:bane_of_arthropods). Running your own world? Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Stacking damage enchantments. Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods share one exclusive group — you can only carry one at a time on a normal sword.
  • Farming the table for Mending. It’s a treasure enchantment; look for books from fishing, raids, villager trades, and structure loot instead.
  • Over-combining on the anvil. Every repair raises the prior-work penalty. Combine books onto the sword in an efficient order before it becomes “Too Expensive.”
  • Running Knockback on a farming sword. It pushes mobs out of your kill zone — keep it for PvP or defensive builds.

FAQ

Is Sharpness or Smite better in 26.2?

Sharpness V is better for general use because its +3 damage applies to everything. Smite V is far stronger against undead specifically (+12.5 damage), so keep a separate Smite sword for the Wither and mob farms.

Did 26.2 change any sword enchantments?

No. The 26.2 “Chaos Cubed” update made no changes to enchantments, swords, combat, or the enchanting table. The only combat-adjacent additions are a sulfur-cube death message and a Fire-Aspect-ignites-sulfur-cube interaction.

Does Sweeping Edge still exist?

Yes, in Java Edition. It was never removed — its internal ID was renamed from sweeping to sweeping_edge in 1.20.5. It does not exist in Bedrock Edition.

How many enchantments can one sword have?

All ten sword enchantments exist, but Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods are mutually exclusive, so a legitimate sword carries one of those three plus any combination of Sweeping Edge, Knockback, Fire Aspect, Looting, Unbreaking, and Mending.

Can I get Mending from an enchanting table?

No. Mending is a treasure enchantment available only as an enchanted book — from fishing, raid drops, librarian trades, and treasure loot like trial chambers, ancient cities, and End cities — then applied with an anvil.
