The bow is still one of the most reliable ranged weapons in Minecraft, but a plain bow only reaches its ceiling once you stack the right enchantments on it. Get the combination right and you can two-shot most hostile mobs from across a ravine, set skeletons ablaze, and never run out of arrows while doing it.
This guide ranks every bow enchantment using the exact in-game numbers, explains when each one is worth a slot, and walks through applying them with an enchanting table, an anvil, and the /enchant command. If you want the full picture across every item, see our All Minecraft Enchantments: Full List and What Each Does (26.2).
TL;DR: The Best Bow Enchantments
- Power V — the single biggest damage boost; always your first pick.
- Infinity I — unlimited arrows from a single arrow in your inventory.
- Flame I — 5 HP of fire damage over 5 seconds on every hit.
- Punch II — pushes targets back nearly 9 blocks to keep them off you.
- Unbreaking III — up to a 75% chance to skip durability loss.
- Mending I — repairs the bow with XP (choose this or Infinity, not both).
A near-perfect PvE bow is Power V + Infinity I + Flame I + Punch II + Unbreaking III. Swap Infinity for Mending if you prefer XP repair over free arrows.
Bow Enchantment Data Table
| Enchantment | Max Level | Effect | Applies To |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power | V (5) | Increases arrow damage by 25% × (level + 1): +50% at I, +75% II, +100% III, +125% IV, +150% V, rounded up to the nearest half-heart. Projectile damage only. | Bow (primary) |
| Punch | II (2) | Adds horizontal knockback. Baseline ≈1.985 blocks; Punch I ≈5.292 total, Punch II ≈8.792 total. Vertical knockback rises from 0.8125 to 1.25 blocks. | Bow (primary) |
| Flame | I (1) | Sets the target on fire for 5 HP of fire damage over 5 seconds. Arrows revert to normal if shot through water or rain. Does not ignite blocks. | Bow (primary) |
| Infinity | I (1) | Firing does not consume regular arrows as long as one is in the inventory. Spectral and tipped arrows are still consumed. | Bow (primary) |
| Unbreaking | III (3) | 100% ÷ (level + 1) chance a use costs durability — 50% / 66.67% / 75% chance to avoid durability loss at I / II / III. | Bows, most tools, weapons, armor |
| Mending | I (1) | Collected XP repairs the held item at 2 durability per 1 experience point instead of filling the XP bar. | Bows plus most gear |
| Curse of Vanishing | I (1) | The item is destroyed on death instead of dropping. Not triggered if stored, dropped manually, or with keepInventory on. | Any enchantable item |
1. Power (Max Level V) — Your Damage Backbone
Power is the reason an enchanted bow outclasses a plain one so dramatically. It increases arrow damage by 25% × (level + 1), rounded up to the nearest half-heart: +50% at level I, +75% at II, +100% at III, +125% at IV, and a full +150% at Power V. It affects projectile damage only, not the bow’s melee, so there is no reason to stop short of level V on any combat bow.
2. Infinity (Max Level I) — Never Craft Arrows Again
Infinity means firing the bow does not consume regular arrows, as long as you keep at least one regular arrow in your inventory. It is a quality-of-life game-changer for exploration and defense. Two caveats: spectral arrows and tipped arrows are still consumed and cannot be fired for free, and Infinity is mutually exclusive with Mending — the anvil refuses to combine them. Pick one lane per bow.
3. Flame (Max Level I) — Free Damage Over Time
Flame sets whatever you hit on fire, dealing 5 HP of fire damage over 5 seconds (the first tick is ignored). That burn stacks on top of your Power-boosted impact damage, which is why it pairs so well. Remember that flaming arrows revert to normal arrows if shot through water or rain, and Flame does not ignite blocks — though it will affect TNT, campfires, and candles. One note for XP farmers: kills by fire drop no XP unless you dealt non-fire damage within the past 5 seconds.
4. Punch (Max Level II) — Space Control
Punch adds horizontal knockback to your arrows. Baseline arrow knockback is about 1.985 blocks; Punch I pushes targets to roughly 5.292 blocks total, and Punch II to about 8.792 blocks, while vertical knockback rises from 0.8125 to 1.25 blocks. Treat these as approximate reference figures, since knockback resistance and terrain change the real distance. It is excellent for kiting fast mobs and for PvP, but skip it if you rely on stationary XP or mob farms where you want targets to stay put.
5. Unbreaking & Mending — Keeping the Bow Alive
Unbreaking III gives a 75% chance to avoid durability loss on any given shot (the formula is 100% ÷ (level + 1), so 50% / 66.67% / 75% at I / II / III). Mending, meanwhile, uses collected experience orbs to repair the held bow at 2 durability per 1 XP point. Together they make a bow effectively permanent — but again, Mending competes with Infinity for the same slot, so decide whether free arrows or XP repair fits your playstyle.

How to Apply These Enchantments
Enchanting table. The maximum enchant level is 30, which requires 15 bookshelves placed around the table (and 825 XP to reach player level 30). From the table you can roll Power (max V), Punch (max II), Flame (max I), Infinity (max I), and Unbreaking (max III) directly onto a bow. Mending and Curse of Vanishing are treasure enchantments and cannot come from the table.
Anvil combining. Place your bow in the left slot and a book or item in the right (sacrifice) slot, which is consumed. Per enchantment: if the sacrifice’s level is higher, the bow upgrades to it; if levels are equal and not already at max, it gains +1 level; if the sacrifice’s level is lower, nothing changes. Incompatible pairs like Infinity + Mending show a red X and refuse to combine. This is how you add treasure enchantments such as Mending via an enchanted book.
The /enchant command (Java). The syntax is /enchant . For example, /enchant @a infinity gives Infinity to all players holding a bow. The command normally respects anvil restrictions, but placing enchantments via /enchant or NBT can force conflicting pairs like Infinity + Mending onto one item, where both then function normally. Running your own server makes this kind of testing painless — spin one up with XGamingServer Minecraft hosting.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Trying to stack Infinity and Mending. They are mutually exclusive under normal gameplay — the anvil will not combine them. Choose one.
- Shooting Flame arrows through rain or water. They revert to normal arrows and lose the burn entirely.
- Putting Punch on a farm bow. The 8.792-block knockback at level II scatters mobs you wanted grouped up.
- Expecting XP from fire kills. Flame kills drop no XP unless you dealt non-fire damage within the last 5 seconds.
- Wasting tipped arrows with Infinity. Only regular arrows are free; spectral and tipped arrows are still consumed.
FAQ
What is the best single bow enchantment?
Power V. It boosts arrow damage by +150% and is the foundation of every serious combat bow.
Can I have both Infinity and Mending on one bow?
Not through normal play — they are mutually exclusive and the anvil refuses to combine them. You can force both on via /enchant or NBT, and if you do, both function normally.
Does Flame set blocks on fire?
No. Flame ignites mobs and players for 5 HP over 5 seconds but does not ignite blocks, though it will affect TNT, campfires, and candles.
How many bookshelves do I need for the best enchants?
15 bookshelves around the enchanting table unlock the level-30 maximum, which needs player level 30 (825 XP).
How do I get Mending on a bow?
Mending is a treasure enchantment, so it never comes from the enchanting table. Apply a Mending book on an anvil, or find it via fishing, librarian trades, and loot chests in structures like trial chambers, strongholds, End cities, and vaults.
Is Curse of Vanishing worth using?
Generally no. It destroys the bow when you die instead of dropping it, cannot be removed by a grindstone, and offers no combat benefit — it exists mainly for challenge or map-making.
