Best Crossbow Enchantments in Minecraft (26.2)

The crossbow is one of Minecraft’s most flexible ranged weapons: it hits hard, holds a charge, and can fire arrows or firework rockets. In Java Edition 26.2 (“Chaos Cubed”), only six enchantments apply to it, so building the perfect crossbow is really about picking the right combination and understanding one key restriction.

This guide walks through every crossbow enchantment with its exact level cap, effect, and the numbers behind it. The most important thing to know up front: Multishot and Piercing are mutually exclusive, so a survival crossbow can carry one of them but never both. Everything else stacks freely.

Best Crossbow Enchantments at a Glance

  • Quick Charge III — cuts reload time to 0.5s. The single biggest quality-of-life upgrade for any crossbow.
  • Piercing IV — arrows pass through up to 5 entities and ignore shields. Best for crowds and PvP.
  • Multishot I — fires 3 arrows at once from a single arrow. Best for burst damage. Pick this or Piercing, not both.
  • Unbreaking III — roughly a 75% chance to skip durability loss per use.
  • Mending I — repairs the crossbow with collected XP orbs, effectively forever.
  • Curse of Vanishing I — optional; destroys the crossbow on death. Skip it unless you want it for a challenge.

1. Quick Charge III — The Must-Have Upgrade

Quick Charge is the enchantment you should prioritize on every crossbow. It decreases reload time by 0.25 seconds per level. A base crossbow takes 1.25 seconds to charge, so Quick Charge I brings it to 1.0s, II to 0.75s, and III to 0.5s — less than half the original time. That translates directly into more shots per encounter, which matters whether you are fighting mobs or players.

One catch: the enchanting table only offers Quick Charge levels I and II. To reach level III you must combine two Quick Charge II crossbows or books on an anvil, or find it via fishing, loot chests (monster rooms, stronghold libraries, mineshafts, desert pyramids), or librarian villager trades. It has no incompatibilities, so it belongs on both Multishot and Piercing builds.

2. Piercing IV — Best for Crowds and Shields

Piercing makes crossbow arrows pass through (level + 1) entities, so at the maximum level IV a single arrow pierces up to 5 targets before stopping. Pierced arrows also ignore shields, do not change direction, and cannot hit the same entity twice in one shot — and the arrow can be picked back up afterward. That combination makes Piercing the strongest pick for lined-up mobs, raids, and PvP against shielded opponents.

Piercing rolls from the enchanting table, anvil, fishing, loot chests, and librarian trades. Remember the golden rule: Piercing and Multishot cannot coexist on the same crossbow. Choose Piercing when you want a single, retrievable arrow that punches through everything.

3. Multishot I — Best for Burst Damage

Multishot fires 3 projectiles in a single shot instead of one, spread 10 degrees apart horizontally (a center arrow plus one to each side). It only consumes 1 arrow or 1 firework rocket from your inventory, which is excellent value — but the crossbow takes 3 durability damage per shot (1 per projectile) instead of the usual 1. Only the center arrow can be retrieved after firing; the two side arrows disappear.

Because Multishot triples your durability drain, it pairs especially well with Unbreaking and Mending. Choose Multishot over Piercing when you want maximum burst against a single tough target (all three arrows can hit up close) or when firing firework rockets. Multishot’s max survival level is I; higher levels only exist through commands.

4. Unbreaking III — Keep It Firing

Unbreaking gives a chance to avoid durability consumption each time the crossbow is used. As a weapon, the formula is a 100% ÷ (level + 1) chance that a use does consume durability — meaning roughly a 50% chance to avoid loss at I, 66.7% at II, and 75% at III. Note that the armor-specific formula (60% + 40% ÷ (level + 1)) does not apply here. Unbreaking has no incompatibilities and is worth maxing on any build, and doubly so on Multishot crossbows that burn 3 durability per shot. Learn more in our guide to what Unbreaking does.

5. Mending I — Effectively Unbreakable

Mending repairs the crossbow whenever you are holding it (main hand, offhand, or an equipped slot) and it is below full durability. Collected experience orbs go into repairs at a rate of 2 durability per 1 XP point instead of into your level, and any excess XP beyond a full repair is granted normally. Paired with Unbreaking, Mending keeps a crossbow alive indefinitely.

Mending is a treasure enchantment — it cannot come from the enchanting table. You can only obtain it from fishing, librarian villager trades, or loot chests (trial chambers, desert pyramids, mineshafts, End cities, ancient cities, and more), then apply it with an anvil. For a deeper look, see our breakdown of what Mending does.

6. Curse of Vanishing I — Optional

Curse of Vanishing destroys the crossbow entirely when you die instead of dropping it. It does not trigger if you manually drop the item, store it in a container, shulker, or bundle, or if the keepInventory gamerule is on. It is also a treasure enchantment, unavailable from the table and applied via anvil. Most players skip it, but it is a valid choice for hardcore or challenge runs.

The Ideal Crossbow Builds

Because Multishot and Piercing are mutually exclusive, there are two “best” crossbows depending on your playstyle:

  • Crowd control build: Quick Charge III + Piercing IV + Unbreaking III + Mending I.
  • Burst / rocket build: Quick Charge III + Multishot I + Unbreaking III + Mending I.
  • Optional add-on: Curse of Vanishing I on either build.

How to Apply These Enchantments

Enchanting Table

The enchanting table can roll Quick Charge (I–II), Multishot, Piercing, and Unbreaking. It cannot produce Quick Charge III, Mending, or Curse of Vanishing — the first requires combining, and the latter two are treasure enchantments.

Anvil Combining

Use an anvil to combine an enchanted book (or another enchanted crossbow) onto your crossbow. Combining two identical-level enchantments raises the level by one — for example, two Quick Charge II become Quick Charge III. The anvil is required for Mending and Curse of Vanishing. Each anvil use adds an increasing prior-work XP penalty, so plan your order carefully (the Enchantment Calculator helps here).

The /enchant Command

On a server or in creative, use /enchant [level]. Examples:

/enchant @p minecraft:quick_charge 3
/enchant @p minecraft:piercing 4
/enchant @p minecraft:multishot 1
/enchant @p minecraft:unbreaking 3
/enchant @p minecraft:mending
/enchant @p minecraft:vanishing_curse

The command respects the item’s applicable and incompatible tags unless overridden, so it will not let you stack Multishot and Piercing normally. Running your own world? Our Minecraft server hosting makes it easy to test commands and share enchanted gear with friends.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trying to combine Multishot and Piercing. They are mutually exclusive — you must choose one per crossbow.
  • Expecting Quick Charge III, Mending, or Curse of Vanishing from the table. None of these can be rolled directly; use an anvil (and treasure sources for the last two).
  • Ignoring Multishot’s extra durability cost. A Multishot shot drains 3 durability, not 1 — pair it with Unbreaking and Mending.
  • Trying to reuse Multishot side arrows. Only the center arrow is retrievable; the two side arrows disappear.
  • Forcing bow enchantments onto a crossbow. Power, Punch, Flame, and Infinity do not work on crossbows in survival.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a crossbow have both Multishot and Piercing?

No. Multishot and Piercing are mutually exclusive in survival. A single crossbow can carry one or the other, never both. Pick Piercing for crowds and shielded enemies, or Multishot for burst damage and firework rockets.

What is the best single crossbow enchantment?

Quick Charge III. It reduces reload time from 1.25 seconds to 0.5 seconds, giving you far more shots per fight, and it has no incompatibilities, so it fits on every build.

How many entities does Piercing IV hit?

Piercing lets an arrow pass through (level + 1) entities, so at level IV it pierces up to 5 entities before stopping. Pierced arrows also ignore shields and cannot hit the same entity twice in one shot.

Does Mending work on a crossbow?

Yes. When the crossbow is held and below full durability, collected XP orbs repair it at 2 durability per 1 XP point. Mending is a treasure enchantment, so you obtain it from fishing, villager trades, or loot chests and apply it with an anvil.

Did anything change for crossbows in Minecraft 26.2?

No. The core crossbow enchantment set and mechanics are unchanged in 26.2 (“Chaos Cubed”), which is a content update with no balance changes to these six enchantments. A Multishot-related crash affecting only command-only levels (32+) was addressed during the 26.2 pre-release cycle and does not affect normal survival play.
