Having trouble connecting to Hytale servers or hosting for friends? This comprehensive troubleshooting guide covers the most common issues and their solutions.
Share Code Not Generated
Symptom: After clicking Save in Online Play settings, no share code appears or you see an error.
Possible Causes and Fixes
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| UPnP disabled on router | Log into your router admin panel and enable UPnP |
| Router doesn’t support UPnP | Use manual port forwarding or Tailscale |
| Multiple routers (Double NAT) | Enable UPnP on all routers, or connect directly to main router |
| Firewall blocking UPnP | Allow Hytale through Windows Firewall |
Friend Cannot Connect
Symptom: Share code generated successfully, but friend gets connection timeout or failure.
Possible Causes and Fixes
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| CGNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT) | ISP shares one IP among customers. Use Tailscale or dedicated server |
| Firewall blocking inbound | Allow Hytale through firewall for both private and public networks |
| UPnP mapping expired | Re-save Online Play settings to refresh the mapping |
| Antivirus interference | Temporarily disable or add Hytale as exception |
| ISP blocking game ports | Contact ISP or use Tailscale |
How to Check for CGNAT
Carrier-Grade NAT means your ISP shares a public IP among multiple customers. UPnP cannot work in this scenario.
Method 1: Traceroute Test
- Open PowerShell (Windows) or Terminal (Linux/Mac)
- Run:
tracert -d 8.8.8.8(Windows) ortraceroute -n 8.8.8.8(Linux/Mac) - Check the first few hops
If the first hop is a public IP (not 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or 172.16-31.x.x), you likely have a direct connection.
If you see multiple private IP ranges before reaching public addresses, you’re behind CGNAT or Double NAT.
Method 2: Compare IPs
- Check your router’s WAN IP (in router admin panel)
- Check your public IP (search “what is my IP” in browser)
- If they don’t match, you’re behind CGNAT
Manual Port Forwarding
If UPnP fails but you have a direct public IP, configure manual port forwarding:
- Note the port shown in your Online Play settings
- Log into your router admin panel
- Find Port Forwarding settings
- Create a rule forwarding the UDP port to your PC’s local IP
- Re-save Online Play settings in Hytale
IPv6 Connectivity
If both you and your friend have IPv6, the share code includes IPv6 addresses and may connect directly even if UPnP fails.
Check IPv6 Status
Visit test-ipv6.com to check if you have working IPv6.
Dedicated Server Connection Issues
Server Not Found
- Verify the server address and port are correct
- Check if the server is online
- Ensure you’re using the correct protocol (Hytale uses QUIC/UDP)
Authentication Failed
- Verify the server is properly authenticated with Hytale services
- Check if your Hytale account is in good standing
- Try restarting both client and server
Connection Timeout
- Check firewall settings on the server
- Verify port 5520/UDP (or custom port) is open
- Test if other players can connect
Alternative Solutions
Try Having Your Friend Host
Different networks have different capabilities. If you can’t host, your friend might be able to.
Use Tailscale
Tailscale creates a peer-to-peer VPN that bypasses most NAT issues. See our Tailscale with Hytale Guide.
Get a Dedicated Server
For guaranteed connectivity without NAT headaches, use a dedicated server hosted in a data center.
