Why These Specs Matter

CPU: Clock Speed Over Cores

Voxel games like Hytale handle many operations sequentially:

  • World generation
  • Entity AI calculations
  • Physics simulation
  • Chunk loading

Single-thread performance (clock speed) matters more than core count. A 4-core CPU at 4.5 GHz will outperform an 8-core at 2.4 GHz.

RAM: Don’t Overbuy

There’s a common misconception that Hytale servers need massive amounts of RAM. Start with:

  • 4-6 GB for small private servers
  • 8-12 GB for community servers
  • Scale up based on actual usage, not assumptions

Storage: NVMe is Essential

For server hosting, NVMe SSD is not optional:

  • Voxel games create random I/O patterns
  • HDDs cause rubber-banding and lag
  • Even SATA SSDs struggle with heavy loads
  • NVMe handles chunk loading efficiently

Network: Quality Over Speed

For servers:

  • Stable connection more important than raw speed
  • Low latency critical for gameplay
  • 1 Gbps recommended for 10+ players
  • DDoS protection for public servers

Java Requirements

Hytale servers require Java 21 or newer:

Recommended Java Distributions

  • OpenJDK 21 – Free, open-source (recommended)
  • Amazon Corretto 21 – AWS-optimized build
  • Adoptium Temurin 21 – Community-maintained

Verify Java Installation

java -version

Should show version 21 or higher.

Operating System Recommendations

For Servers

  • Best: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS – Industry standard, well-documented
  • Good: Debian 12 – Lightweight, stable
  • Windows: Windows Server 2022 – If Windows-only features needed

For Game Client

  • Launch: Windows 10/11 only
  • Later: Mac and Linux support planned

View Distance Impact

View distance is the biggest performance lever:

View Distance Server Load Recommendation
8 chunks Low Conservative start
12 chunks Medium Balanced
16 chunks High Good hardware only
20+ chunks Very High Powerful server required

Tip: Start with lower view distance and increase gradually based on performance.

Early Access Considerations

Since Hytale is in Early Access:

  • Requirements may change with updates
  • Performance will improve over time
  • Monitor official announcements for spec updates
  • Budget for potential scaling needs

Self-Hosting Checklist

Before launching your server, verify:

  • ☐ Java 21+ installed and verified
  • ☐ Sufficient RAM allocated
  • ☐ NVMe SSD storage available
  • ☐ Ports forwarded (UDP)
  • ☐ Firewall configured
  • ☐ Stable network connection
