Knowing exactly where each ore spawns is the difference between hours of aimless digging and a quick, productive mining trip. This guide lists the best Y level for every ore in Minecraft 1.21 — diamonds, iron, gold, redstone, copper, coal, lapis, and emerald — so you always dig at the right depth.
Good news: ore generation has not changed since Minecraft 1.18 introduced the new world height and distribution system. So these levels are accurate for 1.18, 1.19, 1.20, and 1.21 alike.
Best Y level for every ore (1.21) — quick chart
| Ore | Best Y level | Spawn range | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diamond | Y -59 | -64 to 16 | Mine at -54 to dodge lava |
| Redstone | Y -59 | -64 to 16 | Like diamond — deeper is better |
| Gold | Y -18 | -64 to 32 | Badlands biome bonus (any Y 32+) |
| Lapis Lazuli | Y -2 | -64 to 64 | Peaks near sea-level depth |
| Iron | Y 16 & Y 232 | -64 to 320 | Two peaks: underground + mountains |
| Copper | Y 48 | -16 to 112 | Dripstone caves boost it |
| Coal | Y 45 | 0 to 320 | Extremely common everywhere |
| Emerald | Y 224 | -16 to 320 | Mountain biomes ONLY |
Diamond — best Y level -59
Diamonds peak at Y -59, where ore density is highest. Many players actually mine at Y -54 instead: you give up a little density to sit a few blocks above the worst of the lava lakes, which makes branch mining safer and faster overall. Anywhere from Y -59 to -54 is the diamond sweet spot. Below Y -8 diamonds become steadily more common, so never mine for them near the surface.
Redstone — best Y level -59
Redstone follows the same curve as diamond, spawning from Y -64 to 16 and becoming far more common the deeper you go, with the best results at Y -59. That means a single deep branch mine around Y -58 nets you both diamond and redstone at once — the most efficient depth in the game.
Gold — best Y level -18
Gold spawns from Y -64 to 32, peaking around Y -18. The big exception is the Badlands (Mesa) biome, where gold generates with a much higher frequency and a far wider range — you’ll find loads of it near the surface and at any level Y 32 or above. If you need gold in bulk, a Badlands biome beats deep mining every time.
Lapis Lazuli — best Y level -2
Lapis has a distribution centred around Y -2, ranging from Y -64 to 64. It’s most common right around that sea-level-adjacent depth, so it often turns up naturally while you’re mining toward diamond depth.
Iron — best Y levels 16 and 232
Iron is unusual: it has two separate peaks. Underground, it’s densest around Y 16. But the bigger surprise is in mountain biomes above Y 80, where iron generates in huge exposed blobs that peak around Y 232. If you’re near tall mountains, surface-mining iron there is dramatically faster than digging for it.
Copper — best Y level 48
Copper ranges from Y -16 to 112, peaking around Y 48. It’s especially abundant in dripstone caves, which generate large copper deposits, so exploring a dripstone cave network is the fastest way to stockpile it.
Coal — best Y level 45
Coal is the most common ore in the Overworld, with an enormous range from Y 0 all the way to 320 and the highest density around Y 45. You’ll rarely need to go looking for it — it shows up in cliffsides, caves, and almost any dig — but mid-elevation mining yields the most.
Emerald — best Y level 224 (mountains only)
Emerald is the trickiest ore: it generates only in mountain biomes (and their variants), no matter how deep you dig elsewhere. Within mountains it peaks high up around Y 224. If you’re digging in flat terrain hoping for emeralds, you’re wasting your time — head for the peaks.

Mining tips for 1.21
- Branch mine at Y -58 to hit diamond, redstone, and lapis in one trip.
- Carry a water bucket at deep levels to neutralise lava instantly.
- Use Fortune III on diamond, redstone, coal, lapis, and emerald to multiply drops (it doesn’t help iron/copper/gold, which drop raw ore).
- Light as you go to stop mobs spawning in your tunnels.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Y level for diamonds in 1.21?
Y -59 has the highest diamond density. Many players mine at Y -54 to stay just above the worst lava while still finding plenty.
Did ore distribution change in Minecraft 1.21?
No. Ore generation has been unchanged since 1.18, so the same Y levels apply to 1.19, 1.20, and 1.21.
What Y level is best for iron in 1.21?
Iron has two peaks — Y 16 underground and Y 232 in mountain biomes. Mountains above Y 80 often have huge exposed iron deposits.
Where do emeralds spawn in Minecraft 1.21?
Only in mountain biomes, peaking around Y 224. You won’t find emeralds in flat terrain no matter how deep you dig.
