Minecraft Spawner Calculator
Check whether your mob spawner is active from your AFK spot, see the 16-block range, entity cap and light rules, and estimate mobs and XP per hour.

Spawner Type
Zombie light rule: Block light 0 only (one torch stops it)
Positions
Look at the spawner and read 'Targeted Block' from the F3 screen.
Stand where you will AFK and read the 'Block' line from F3 (your feet).
Conditions
An open, flat 9×9 floor with 2–3 blocks of headroom pushes this toward 100%. Walls, water and the spawner itself take up candidate spots.
Spawner Status
At your current height you can move up to 16.0 blocks sideways from the spawner and keep it running.
Java Edition Spawner Rules
- Activation range
- Player feet within a 16-block sphere of the block centre
- Spawn volume
- 9 × 3 × 9 centred on the spawner
- Attempts per cycle
- 4 (each can fail independently)
- Delay between cycles
- 200–799 ticks (10–39.95 s)
- Entity cap
- 6 of the same mob touching the 9 × 9 × 9 box
- Failed cycle
- Retries every tick until something spawns
Bedrock Edition differs: its horizontal spawn area is diamond-shaped and the entity check uses a larger box. Trial spawners follow their own rules and are not modelled here.
Farm Tips
- • Flush mobs out of the 9×9×9 box with water streams so the 6-mob cap never triggers.
- • Light up the area around the spawner room so normal spawns don’t compete for kills.
- • To disable a zombie spawner, place a single torch on it.
- • Where you stand inside the 16-block sphere doesn’t change the spawn rate — pick a spot that’s safe and close to the kill chamber.
Plan a spawner farm that actually runs
A monster spawner only works while a player is inside a 16-block sphere around it. Enter the spawner's coordinates and your AFK spot to see straight away whether it's running, and how much room you have to move.
Every cycle the spawner makes four attempts to place a mob in a 9×3×9 area, then waits 10 to 40 seconds. Six mobs of the same type crowding the area cancels the cycle, which is why fast water streams matter.
Each mob type has its own light rule. Zombie and skeleton spawners need total darkness, while blaze and silverfish spawners keep going up to light 11.
Minecraft Spawner Calculator — FAQ
How far can I be from a spawner?
It's active while your feet are less than 16 blocks from the centre of the spawner block, measured as a sphere.
Why did my spawner stop spawning?
Usually you moved out of the 16-block range, 6 or more of the same mob are still in the 9×9×9 area, or the room is too bright for that mob.
How do I turn off a spawner without breaking it?
For zombie, skeleton and spider spawners one torch is enough. Blaze and silverfish spawners need light 12 or higher. Magma cube spawners ignore light, so fill the spawn area with blocks.
