Valheim Plains Guide: Black Metal, Flax, Deathsquitos & Yagluth

The Plains are Valheim’s fifth biome — golden, open and deceptively deadly. An unprepared player can die in seconds here, but the Plains hold blackmetal, the crops for the best armor, and the path to the Mistlands. This guide covers how to survive and progress the Plains.

The dangers (respect them)

The Plains will kill careless players fast:

• Deathsquitos — tiny flying insects that hit for massive damage and can one-shot weak players. Kill them on sight (one hit usually does it).
• Fulings — goblin-like warriors, especially Berserkers and Shamans, that roam in dangerous villages.
• Lox — massive beasts; avoid or tame them (see our taming guide).

Key resources

• Black Metal — from Fulings and Fuling totems; forged into the best physical weapons of the tier.
• Barley & Flax — grow only in the Plains. Barley makes bread and fire resistance wine; flax becomes linen for Padded armor. See our farming guide.
• Tar — from tar pits (guarded by Growths), used for dark building materials.
• Needles — from Deathsquitos, crafted into the strong Needle Arrows.

Tips

• Approach in padded armor with the Bonemass power ready.
• Farm barley and flax in a walled Plains plot — they won’t grow anywhere else.
• Raid Fuling villages carefully for black metal, totems and coins.

The boss: Yagluth

Gather 5 Fuling Totems and face Yagluth. His power reduces elemental damage — vital for the Mistlands.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I keep dying in the Plains?

Usually Deathsquitos — they hit incredibly hard. Come in padded armor, kill them instantly, and don’t wander in under-geared.

Where do you get flax and barley?

Only in the Plains. Farm them in a walled plot; they won’t grow in other biomes.
