Dungeons are one of the fastest ways to gain experience, capture tougher Pals and find Skill Fruits in Palworld. They are cave-style instances scattered across the Palpagos Islands, each capped by a single Alpha Pal boss and a guaranteed loot room. This guide covers how dungeons spawn, how to find their entrances, what the boss and chests give you, how respawning works, and the recommended level for each region. Mechanics in Palworld shift between updates, so treat exact figures as version-dependent and check the in-game timer at the entrance for the current state of your world.
How Palworld dungeons work
Dungeons are semi-randomly placed locations: only a limited number are open at any given time, and when one closes, another opens somewhere else on the map. Entrances are typically built into the walls of mountains as large, dark cave openings, so they are easy to spot once you know to look at cliff faces and rock formations. There is no time limit on completing a dungeon once you are inside, and the interior has no minimap, so you simply push forward through the tunnels toward the boss room at the end.
Layouts and hazards vary by biome. Volcanic dungeons around Mount Obsidian feature fire-type enemies and lava, while northern and snowy caverns lean ice-type, and desert dungeons sit in the arid central region. The Sakurajima and Feybreak island expansions added their own higher-level dungeon types. Each dungeon shares a pool of possible Alpha Pals tied to its biome, so the boss you face is randomized within that pool rather than fixed.
Finding dungeon entrances
The most reliable way to hunt dungeons is to explore mountainous terrain and watch the cliff walls for cave mouths. If you want a shortcut, the Pal Leezpunk has a partner skill called Sixth Sense that highlights nearby dungeons, making it a popular dungeon-finding companion. Because dungeons relocate over time, a spot that was empty earlier may host a new dungeon later, so it is worth re-checking known mountain pockets as you travel. Unlocking fast travel statues near dungeon-dense regions makes farming far less of a slog.
The dungeon boss: Alpha Pals
Every dungeon ends with one guaranteed Alpha Pal boss. Alpha Pals are oversized, more aggressive versions of normal Pals with significantly higher stats, and defeating a dungeon Alpha awards considerably more experience than catching the standard wild version of the same species. You can either kill the boss for the XP and drops or throw Pal Spheres at it to capture it, which is the only way to obtain that Alpha as a usable Pal. Lower the boss’s health first to improve your capture odds, and bring Pals whose element counters the dungeon’s biome theme.
Loot, chests and rewards
After the boss is cleared you reach a chest room with two guaranteed chests of random rarity, and additional chests are scattered along the path through the dungeon. Common rewards include Skill Fruits (which teach Pals active attacks), accessories that boost the player, and schematics. Higher-tier dungeons tend to drop higher-rarity rewards, so endgame caverns are the place to farm the best Skill Fruits. Some chests can be locked and may require keys, so it is worth carrying the means to open them. If you pull a Skill Fruit you do not recognize, our Palworld Skill Fruits guide breaks down which active skills are worth keeping.
Recommended level by dungeon region
Dungeons carry an indicative level shown near the entrance. A good rule of thumb is that going in around five levels under the listed value is manageable, but a larger gap gets punishing fast. The named caverns below come from the wiki’s dungeon list; the exact set in your world depends on your version and which expansions are installed.
| Dungeon | Indicative level | Region / theme |
|---|---|---|
| Isolated Island Cavern | ~13 | Early-game starter area |
| Hillside Cavern | ~13 | Early grassland |
| Ravine Grotto | ~19 | Lower mid-game |
| Mountain Stream Grotto | ~29 | Mid-game |
| Volcanic Cavern | ~38 | Mount Obsidian (fire) |
| Cavern of the Dunes | ~40 | Desert |
| Astral Mountains Cavern | ~45 | Northern snow |
| Cherry Blossom Cave | ~52 | Sakurajima island |
| Feybreak Cavern | ~58 | Feybreak island |
Death, respawn and dungeon reset timers
If you die inside a dungeon, the game removes you and prompts you to pick a respawn point; your dropped items can then be recovered back at the dungeon entrance, so a wipe is recoverable as long as you can return. If you are simply over your head, you can also walk back out of the entrance you came in through.
Dungeons despawn and relocate after a set period whether or not you completed them, on the order of a few real-time hours (commonly cited as roughly 200 minutes, with other figures floating around) or about one in-game day. The boss and chests reset on that same dungeon timer. Importantly, the countdown is tied to in-game time speed, so on a dedicated server the DayTimeSpeedRate and NightTimeSpeedRate settings (default 1) effectively change how long dungeons stay available — lowering them slows time and prolongs dungeons, while raising them speeds resets up. Because these numbers move between patches and server configs, always trust the live timer shown at the entrance over any fixed value.
Tips for clearing dungeons efficiently
- Match your team’s element to counter the dungeon’s biome theme (water Pals for volcanic, fire for ice).
- Bring plenty of Pal Spheres if you want to capture the Alpha rather than kill it.
- Carry healing food and check ailment cures — see our status effects guide for what dungeon hazards can inflict.
- Stock cooked meals before a run; the right buffs help in tough fights, as covered in our cooking and food guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do Palworld dungeons respawn?
Yes. Dungeons close and relocate elsewhere on the map after a set period, and a defeated or captured Alpha boss returns on that same reset timer. Check the timer displayed at the entrance for the exact countdown in your world.
What level should I be for dungeons?
Each dungeon lists an indicative level near its entrance, from early-game caverns around level 13 up to Feybreak content near level 58. Entering a few levels under the listed value is doable, but a large gap makes the Alpha boss very tough.
What do dungeon chests give you?
The boss room has two guaranteed chests, with more along the route. Typical contents include Skill Fruits, accessories and schematics, with higher-tier dungeons yielding higher-rarity rewards. Some chests are locked and may need keys.
Dungeon runs are far more fun with a group splitting boss duty and loot — if you want a persistent world to farm Alphas with friends, you can rent a Palworld server and tune dungeon and time-speed settings to your liking. For the technical side of editing those server options, see the Palworld server documentation. You can also branch out into related systems with our Paldeck guide and character stats guide.
