Valheim Combat Guide: Parrying, Blocking, Dodging & Stamina

Master Valheim combat — stamina management, the game-changing parry, dodge rolling, weapon skills and matching damage types.

Valheim’s combat looks simple but rewards skill heavily — a well-timed parry can stagger an enemy for a guaranteed critical hit, turning a deadly foe into an easy kill. This guide covers the combat mechanics that separate survivors from corpses.

Stamina is everything

Almost every action — attacking, blocking, dodging, running, jumping — costs stamina. Run out mid-fight and you’re helpless. Keep at least one stamina food active (see the food guide), and don’t spam attacks — leave stamina in reserve to dodge or block.

Blocking and parrying

Holding block with a shield reduces incoming damage. But the real power move is the parry: block at the moment an attack lands and you’ll stagger the enemy, leaving them open to a guaranteed critical hit (often double damage or more). Parry timing is the single highest-value combat skill in Valheim — master it and even tough enemies fold. Different shields have different parry/block strength, so upgrade as you progress.

Dodge rolling

Tap dodge (with enough stamina) to roll through an attack with brief invincibility. Dodging is essential against enemies you can’t parry — bosses with huge attacks, charging Lox, or when you’re using a two-handed weapon with no shield. Light armor improves your dodge.

Weapon skills and secondary attacks

Each weapon type levels its own skill the more you use it, raising your damage and lowering stamina cost — so sticking with a weapon class pays off. Every weapon also has a secondary attack (often a different mouse button): atgeirs get a wide spin for crowds, spears can be thrown, swords lunge. Learn each weapon’s secondary to handle groups and reach.

Match damage to the enemy

Combat skill also means choosing the right tool: blunt for skeletons, fire for Greydwarves, spirit for undead. Carry a couple of weapon types and swap as needed — our weapons guide breaks down every damage type.

Practice together

Co-op opens up tactics — one player parries and staggers while others burst the enemy down. A Valheim dedicated server keeps your world online 24/7 so your crew can train and take on the bosses together.

Frequently asked questions

How does parrying work in Valheim?

Block at the exact moment an attack hits to stagger the enemy, then land a guaranteed critical hit. Parry power depends on your shield.

How do you stagger enemies in Valheim?

Parry their attacks, or deal enough rapid damage. A staggered enemy takes critical damage.

Why do I keep running out of stamina?

You’re likely not eating a stamina food and over-committing to attacks. Keep stamina food active and leave a reserve for dodging.
