Farming turns Valheim from a survival scramble into a self-sufficient operation. A good farm gives you a renewable supply of food ingredients, mead components and the flax and barley you need for the best armor. This guide covers how to farm every crop in Valheim.
Getting started: the Cultivator
You can’t plant anything until you craft the Cultivator, which requires bronze (so progress the Black Forest first). The Cultivator tills soil and lets you plant seeds and crops on any grassy ground. Flat, cleared ground near your base is ideal — use the Hoe to level it first.
Crops you can farm
- Carrots — plant Carrot Seeds (grown from a wild carrot). A staple early food and breeding feed for boars.
- Turnips — plant Turnip Seeds found in the Swamp. Used in turnip stew.
- Onions — plant Onion Seeds found in Mountain caves. Used in onion soup.
- Barley — from the Plains. There are no “barley seeds” — you replant the grain itself. Used for bread, fire resistance wine and lox feed. Only grows in the Plains.
- Flax — from the Plains. Replant the flax itself. Spun into linen thread for Padded armor. Only grows in the Plains.
- Seeds & trees — plant Birch and Oak seeds, pine/fir cones and beech seeds to grow your own wood.
The Plains problem: barley and flax
Barley and flax are the most valuable crops because they gate bread and Padded armor — but they only grow in the Plains biome. You either farm them in a defended Plains outpost or, as many players do, set up a protected plot in a Plains corner. They also need warmth, so keep them away from snow biomes.
Farming tips
- Space your plants. Crops won’t grow if planted too close together — leave a small gap. The Cultivator shows a red outline when a spot is too crowded.
- Fence it off. Boars, deer and raids can trample or eat your crops — wall the farm in.
- Plant in bulk. Always replant more than you harvest so your supply compounds.
- Crops don’t grow in winter biomes — keep farms in temperate areas.
Keep your farm growing 24/7
Crops only grow while the world is loaded. A Valheim dedicated server keeps your world online around the clock, so your carrots, barley and flax keep maturing even when no one’s logged in — ready to harvest for your next cooking session.
Frequently asked questions
How do you farm in Valheim?
Craft the bronze Cultivator, till grassy ground, and plant seeds or crops with a little space between each.
Where do barley and flax grow?
Only in the Plains biome. You replant the grain/flax itself rather than separate seeds.
Why won’t my crops grow?
Usually they’re planted too close together, it’s a cold biome, or they haven’t had enough time. Space them out and keep farms in temperate areas.
