For most of Valheim’s history you fought with steel and arrows — but the Mistlands introduced full magic. If you want to sling fireballs, freeze enemies or raise an army of skeletons, this guide explains how to build a mage in Valheim.
Unlocking magic: Eitr
Magic runs on Eitr, a resource you can’t access until the Mistlands. Eat blue Magecap mushrooms for a starter Eitr bar, then progress to Refined Eitr foods made in an Eitr Refinery. Without Eitr food, your Eitr pool is zero — food is the foundation of every magic build. See our Mistlands guide.
Eitr-weave armor
A mage’s armor is Eitr-weave, which trades some protection for big Eitr regeneration (around +20% from the hood, +40% each from the robe and trousers). It’s a must for any serious caster — see the armor guide.
The staves
Magic weapons are staves, crafted at the Galdr Table:
- Staff of Embers — fires explosive fireballs; strong single-target and AoE fire damage.
- Staff of Frost — launches frost projectiles that slow enemies.
- Dead Raiser — summons skeleton minions to fight for you, the core of a summoner build.
- Staff of Protection — casts a shield that absorbs damage, key for survivability.
How to play a mage
Magic builds are about resource management: you balance your Eitr bar like stamina, weaving casts with dodges. A popular hybrid is the battlemage — a melee weapon in one hand and a staff in the other, switching as Eitr allows. Pure summoners let skeletons tank while they cast from range. Either way, carry a Protection shield cast for emergencies and keep your Eitr food fresh.
Match food to your build
Mages need Eitr-heavy foods like Marinated Greens and Yggdrasil Porridge — see our best food guide for the top Eitr meals and combos.
Level up your mage with friends
A summoner and a tank make a deadly duo. A Valheim dedicated server keeps your world online 24/7 so your group can farm Eitr and push the endgame together.
