The Swamp is Valheim’s third biome and a major difficulty spike — dark, perpetually raining, and full of poison. But it’s the only source of iron, so you can’t skip it. This guide covers how to survive and progress the Swamp.
Key resource: Iron
Iron comes from Scrap Iron mined inside Sunken Crypts, which you can only open with the Swamp Key dropped by The Elder. You’ll also gather Ancient Bark (from Swamp trees) and Withered Bones for the boss. Iron unlocks much stronger weapons, armor and tools.
Dangers
The Swamp is brutal: Draugr and Draugr Elites, Blobs and Oozers (poison), Leeches in the water, Wraiths at night, and Surtlings near fire geysers. Poison is the big killer — brew Poison Resistance mead before you go (see our mead guide). It’s always raining here, so you can’t rely on frost mead, and the ground is treacherous.
Tips
- Build a small fortified outpost with a portal near the crypts to ferry iron home (you can’t portal metal on default settings).
- Root armor’s pierce resistance helps against Draugr archers.
- Clear Sunken Crypts methodically — they’re packed with iron and loot.
The boss: Bonemass
Gather 10 Withered Bones and face Bonemass, who’s weak to blunt damage. He drops the Wishbone.
