Somewhere out there is a wall of green gas hiding some of the best loot in DayZ — and the bodies of everyone who walked in without a gas mask. Contaminated zones are permanent toxic-gas areas that punish the unprepared and reward the geared. Here’s how they work, where they are, and how to loot them without dying.
Every static contaminated zone is plotted on our DayZ Spawn Map (toggle the “Contaminated Zone” layer), pulled straight from the server files so you can see the exact positions and radius on Chernarus, Livonia and Sakhal.
What a contaminated zone actually does
Step inside the gas without protection and you’ll start taking toxic damage almost immediately — your screen tints, you cough, and your health drains fast. The damage scales the deeper you go, so a few steps might be survivable but the centre is lethal. You cannot out-heal it; the only answer is protective gear.
The gear you need
- Gas mask with a working filter — the filter degrades with use, so carry spares. A gas mask without a filter does nothing.
- NBC suit (jacket, pants, gloves, boots, hood) — full coverage stops the gas reaching your skin. Partial coverage still lets damage through.
- Bring a backup — if your filter runs out mid-zone, you need to be moving out, not searching bags.
Where they are
Sakhal is by far the most contaminated map — it has around 50 static toxic zones, part of what makes the winter island so punishing. Chernarus and Livonia have fewer static zones (roughly 8-9 each) but they sit on top of genuinely valuable loot — think military and specialist gear. On top of the static zones, dynamic contaminated areas can appear temporarily around certain events, so a clear patch of map isn’t always safe forever.
Why bother? The loot
Contaminated zones exist to gate high-tier loot behind a gear check. Inside you’ll find some of the strongest items in the game — which is exactly why experienced players keep an NBC kit ready.
