Minecraft Wolf Guide: Taming, All 9 Variants, Breeding and Armour

Wolves are Minecraft’s loyal companions — tame one and it fights by your side, defends you from mobs, and now comes in nine coat colours depending on where you find it. This guide covers taming, all the variants, breeding, healing, wolf armour, and combat behaviour. All numbers verified against the official Minecraft Wiki.

Wolf stats at a glance

Stat Value
Wild health 8 HP (4 hearts)
Tamed health 40 HP (20 hearts)
Tamed attack damage 4 HP (all difficulties)
Taming item Bones (1/3 chance each)

How to tame a wolf

Feed a wild wolf bones — each has a 1 in 3 chance to tame it. Keep feeding until hearts appear and it gains a red collar. Taming jumps its health from 8 to 40 HP. You can’t tame a wolf that’s already angry (they turn hostile if you attack one — the whole pack does).

The nine wolf variants by biome

Wolves now spawn with a coat colour based on the biome you find them in — collect all nine by travelling:

Variant Biome
Pale (classic) Taiga
Woods Forest
Ashen Snowy Taiga
Black Old Growth Pine Taiga
Chestnut Old Growth Spruce Taiga
Rusty Sparse Jungle
Spotted Savanna Plateau
Snowy Grove
Striped Wooded Badlands

Breeding and healing

Feed two tamed wolves at full health any meat (raw or cooked chicken, pork, beef, mutton, rabbit, or rotten flesh) to breed them — the baby inherits a parent’s variant. To heal an injured wolf, feed it meat, which restores 2–20 HP depending on the food. Breeding cooldown is 5 minutes (Java) or 1 minute (Bedrock); pups grow up in 20 minutes.

Wolf armour

You can now craft wolf armour from armadillo scutes and equip it on a tamed adult wolf for protection — it has 64 durability, and you repair it with armadillo scutes (about 8 durability each). Remove it with shears. Armour makes a combat wolf far more survivable in fights and raids.

Combat behaviour

Tamed wolves attack whatever you attack, and anything that hurts you. Standing (sitting-toggled-off) tamed wolves even attack skeletons on sight. Notably they won’t attack creepers or ghasts — so they won’t accidentally set off a creeper next to you. Kills your wolf makes still count as your kills for XP and drops in most cases. Wolves whine when low on health (below 20 HP in Java) so you know to heal them.

Collar colours

Dye a tamed wolf’s collar any of the 16 dye colours to tell your pack apart — useful when you’re running several.

Java vs Bedrock differences

  • Java wolves whine below 20 HP; Bedrock below 10 HP.
  • Java accepts rabbit stew and fish for breeding; Bedrock has a 10% natural baby spawn chance.

FAQ

How many bones to tame a wolf? On average 3 (each bone is a 1/3 chance), but it’s random — carry a stack.

Why did a whole wolf pack attack me? Hitting one wild wolf angers every wolf nearby. Never attack wolves you want to tame.

Do wolves take fall/other damage? Yes — keep them out of long falls and lava; armour and prompt healing keep them alive.
