Terraria Events Guide: How to Trigger and Beat Every Event

Events are some of the most rewarding combat encounters in Terraria. They drop exclusive weapons, accessories and crafting materials you cannot get anywhere else, and many of them double as efficient ways to farm coins or progress through Hardmode. This guide covers how to trigger every major event, what gates each one behind your progression, and how to come out on top. All mechanics below are checked against the official Terraria Wiki.

How events work in Terraria

Events fall into a few categories. Invasions (Goblin Army, Pirate Invasion, Frost Legion, Martian Madness) spawn waves of enemies until you clear a kill quota. Wave events (Pumpkin Moon, Frost Moon, Old One’s Army, the Lunar Events) escalate in difficulty and are scored on points or boss kills. Random/weather events like Blood Moon and Solar Eclipse change spawn rules for a full night or day. Most invasion enemies will only spawn while you are no deeper than the surface layer, so fight these events on flat ground out in the open rather than in a deep base.

Many events can be summoned manually with an item, and almost all of these summon items require at least one player in the world to have a maximum health above a set threshold. Below is a quick reference for the main events.

Pre-Hardmode events

The Blood Moon has a 1/9 chance each night once a player has more than 120 maximum health, and it will not start on a new moon. It boosts surface spawn rates, lets enemies appear near towns, gives zombies the ability to open doors, and raises fishing power by 1.1x while unlocking Blood Moon-only fishing catches. You can force one with a Bloody Tear. There is no boss, so just hold a defensible spot near your NPCs.

The Goblin Army can occur at dawn with a roughly 1/3 chance once you have broken a Shadow Orb or Crimson Heart, no other invasion is active, and a player has 200+ maximum health. A Goblin Battle Standard summons it manually and, usefully, works even before any orb is broken. Clear the wave to free the Goblin Tinkerer NPC and farm Spiky Balls and the Harpoon. Build a long flat arena and funnel goblins into a choke point.

The Old One’s Army is a tower-defense style event introduced through the Tavernkeep (who appears as the Unconscious Man after you beat the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu). Tier 1 is available in pre-Hardmode, runs five waves with Dark Mage mini-bosses, and pays out Defender Medals you spend on the Tavernkeep’s gear. Protect the Eternia Crystal at all costs; if it is destroyed, the event fails.

Hardmode invasions

The Pirate Invasion can start randomly at dawn in Hardmode after an altar is destroyed, or be summoned with a Pirate Map (which works in pre-Hardmode worlds too). Its standout enemy, the Flying Dutchman, counts as 10 kills toward completion and drops The Dutchman cannon. Standard pirates can drop the Coin Gun, Cutlass, Lucky Coin and Pirate Staff, making this a strong farm.

The Solar Eclipse is a daytime event with a 1/20 chance after you defeat a mechanical boss (or use a Solar Tablet). It runs from 4:30 AM to 7:30 PM. Mothron, the toughest enemy, only spawns once Plantera has been defeated (changed in Desktop 1.4.1 from the old three-mechs requirement). The Frost Legion replaces normal enemies with snowmen and is summoned with a Snow Globe by any player with 200+ max health.

The post-Golem Martian Madness begins when a Martian Probe scans you (its lights turn red) and escapes. The Martian Saucer only appears after about 30% progress and becomes common past 50%; each one counts as 10 kills and can drop the Influx Waver, Xeno Staff and Cosmic Car Key. Keep mobility high to dodge its laser sweep.

The Moons: Pumpkin and Frost

Both Moons require Hardmode and a defeated Plantera, and both run 20 waves that progress on kill points rather than a timer, ending at 4:30 AM. The Pumpkin Moon (Pumpkin Moon Medallion) introduces Mourning Wood and then Pumpking, which behaves like Skeletron and flies through blocks. Reaching wave 15 needs 3,410 points; wave 20 needs 10,160. The Frost Moon (Naughty Present) escalates harder: Everscream appears at wave 4, Santa-NK1 at wave 7, and the Ice Queen at wave 11. Build a dedicated arena with platforms, campfires/heart lanterns, and a high-DPS weapon to push deep waves before dawn.

Endgame: the Lunar Events

Defeating the Lunatic Cultist triggers the Lunar Events, where four Celestial Pillars (Solar, Vortex, Nebula, Stardust) appear around the world. Destroy all four to make the Moon Lord spawn. Each pillar drops a unique fragment used to craft some of the strongest gear in the game, so it is worth farming enemies around each pillar before breaking it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I summon events early with items?

Many summon items work outside their usual trigger. A Goblin Battle Standard summons the Goblin Army even before you break an orb, and both the Pirate Map and Snow Globe function in pre-Hardmode worlds, as long as a player meets the maximum-health requirement (200 for those three).

Why aren’t event enemies spawning?

Invasion enemies need you near the surface, so fighting in a deep underground base suppresses spawns. Only one invasion can run at a time, and events like the Pumpkin Moon will not stack with a Blood Moon. A Pirate Invasion can even cancel an active Pumpkin Moon.

Which event is best for farming loot?

The Pirate Invasion is excellent for coins (Coin Gun, Lucky Coin), while the Pumpkin and Frost Moons offer the best weapons and accessories per run once you can push past wave 15. For raw cash farming, see our Terraria money guide.

Events are far more fun with a squad pooling DPS across a shared arena, and running your own always-on Terraria server lets friends drop in for a Pumpkin Moon whenever the mood strikes.
