Valheim Fishing Guide: Rod, Bait & How to Catch Fish

How fishing works in Valheim — getting a rod and bait from Haldor, casting and reeling, bait types, and the harpoon alternative.

Fishing is a relaxing, renewable food source in Valheim — and some fish make genuinely strong meals. But the system isn’t obvious, and you can’t even start without a specific item from the trader. Here’s how fishing works in Valheim.

What you need to fish

Fishing requires two things, both bought from Haldor the trader: a Fishing Rod and Fishing Bait. You can’t craft them, so find Haldor first — see our Haldor guide. Keep some Coins spare for restocking bait.

How to fish

  1. Equip the Fishing Rod and make sure you have bait (it loads automatically).
  2. Hold left-click to charge your cast — longer hold throws the line further — then release near a fish.
  3. When a fish bites and the bobber dips, hold right-click to reel. Reeling drains stamina, so keep your stamina topped up or the fish escapes.
  4. Reel the fish all the way to shore to collect it.

Bigger, deeper-water fish put up more of a fight and need more stamina to land — eat a stamina food before a serious fishing session.

Bait types and biomes

Different fish live in different biomes, and stronger fish need the matching bait. As you progress, you’ll get access to better bait for the tougher fish found around the Ocean, Swamp, Mountains and beyond. Match your bait to the waters you’re fishing.

No rod? Use a harpoon

You can also catch fish — and other creatures — with the Abyssal Harpoon, crafted from Chitin found in the Ocean’s underwater reefs. Harpoon a fish and drag it onto land, where it flops and can be picked up. It’s a handy alternative for big fish and for dragging lox during taming.

Cooking your catch

Raw fish can be cooked on a cooking station for a solid health food, and combined into stronger dishes like fish wraps (with bread) later on. Some fish are among the better balanced foods in the game — see our best food guide for where they rank.

Fish a persistent world with friends

Fishing is a great low-pressure activity for a group base. A Valheim dedicated server keeps your shared world online 24/7 so the whole crew can build docks, stock the larder and fish together any time, with full crossplay at the 1.0 launch.
