Ginger Island in Stardew Valley is the tropical end-game region in the Fern Islands, reached by repairing Willy’s boat. It bundles together a fresh farm, a volcano dungeon, fossil research, parrot puzzles, and 130 Golden Walnuts to collect, making it the largest single area added after the base valley.
Quick answer: how to unlock Ginger Island
After you complete the Community Center bundles (or view the Joja Warehouse completion cutscene), Willy mails you an invitation to the back room of his Fish Shop. Inside is an old boat that needs three repairs. Provide the materials below, and after an overnight cutscene the boat is ready. From then on a ticket to Ginger Island and back costs 1,000g.
- Hull: 200 Hardwood
- Anchor: 5 Iridium Bars
- Ticket stand: 5 Battery Packs
Unlocking Ginger Island
The boat in Willy’s back room is the only way to reach Ginger Island, the single visitable island in the Fern Islands archipelago. The repair invitation arrives by mail once you finish the Community Center or trigger the Joja Warehouse cutscene, so the island is firmly an end-game destination.
When you first land, you arrive at a dock on the southern beach with only one open path. The rest of the island is sealed off by sleeping turtles and parrots, and you open it up over time by spending Golden Walnuts. You can always return to the valley for free by stepping back onto the boat on the southern beach. The island also ignores seasons entirely: like the Greenhouse, any crop can be planted and grown there year-round, and the local fish and weather run on their own schedule.
The island areas
Island South (the landing)
This is where the boat drops you. It holds the dock, a small beach with building ruins, and three paths leading east, north, and west. At first only the east path is open; two large turtles block the north and west routes. The Island Obelisk and Warp Totem: Island also deposit you here. Once you build the Island Farmhouse, you can rebuild the ruins into a Beach Resort for 20 Golden Walnuts, after which a rotating subset of Pelican Town villagers visits on clear non-festival days, and Gus runs a bar when he comes.
Island East (the jungle and Leo)
Walking east from the dock leads into a jungle where Fiddlehead Ferns spawn, plus a hut where the boy Leo lives with a talking parrot. That parrot tells you how many Golden Walnuts remain to be found in each area, which makes it your running tracker for completion. The jungle also hides a package of 3 Tent Kits and a Gem Birds puzzle reachable through a hidden eastern path. Following Leo into this jungle and interacting in his hut is what removes the turtle blocking the northern exit.
Island North (the Dig Site and Professor Snail)
North of the dock sits the Dig Site, the Island Field Office, the Island Trader, and the volcano. A broken bridge repaired by parrots for 10 Golden Walnuts opens the Dig Site, a quarry-like zone where rocks, Bone Nodes, Clay Nodes, and Mahogany seeds spawn daily. Nearby is the Mushroom Cave, where a boulder blocks someone calling for help: drop any bomb to free Professor Snail and unlock the Island Field Office. With Snail rescued, you can donate fossils and answer the Island Survey at the office for rewards. The Island Trader, a bluebird merchant, barters island-themed items for foraged goods once you build the Island Farmhouse and give its parrot 10 Golden Walnuts.
Island West (the farm and Birdie)
The western path is blocked by a sleeping turtle that wakes when you pay a nearby parrot 10 Golden Walnuts (this parrot only appears after Leo’s parrot has received its own walnut). West is the biggest section: the Island Farm and its dilapidated farmhouse, the Gourmand Frog who rewards walnuts for growing Melon, then Wheat, then Garlic, and Birdie’s Shack. Birdie gives the quest “The Pirate’s Wife,” and a nearby shipwreck (her late husband’s ship) holds a Golden Walnut. The west also packs several walnut puzzles: the Green Whack-a-Mole, the Colored Crystals (Simon Says) cave, the Tiger Slime Grove, and Qi’s Walnut Room.
Island Southeast and the Beach Resort extras
Building the Beach Resort also clears debris east of the dock, opening Island Southeast. It contains a star-shaped tide pool and a hidden Pirate Cove, the only place to catch the Stingray. Pirates visit after 8pm on even-numbered, non-rainy days, when you can play Darts for Golden Walnuts (rewards stop after your first three wins). On rainy days a Mermaid appears on the large offshore rock, and solving her Flute Block song rewards 5 Golden Walnuts.
The Volcano Dungeon & Forge
At the far north of Island North is the Volcano Dungeon, a ten-level descent where eight of the levels are randomly generated, similar to the Skull Cavern. The fifth level has a shop, and the tenth and final level holds the Forge, where you upgrade tools and weapons using Cinder Shards. You’ll need a watering can to cut a path through the lava, and that path doesn’t persist between days, so you remake it each visit. After you reach the Forge and unlock the exit door, a parrot offers to build a permanent bridge for 5 Golden Walnuts.
Golden Walnuts
Golden Walnuts are the currency of the island’s parrots, and there are 130 in total scattered across the island. You earn them through exploration, killing monsters, farming, fishing, mining, breaking crates in the Volcano Dungeon, and solving the various puzzles. Your saved count appears under your name in the Skills tab, and walnuts are shared between players in multiplayer.
Spend them to open the island piece by piece: 10 to wake the west turtle, 10 to repair the Dig Site bridge, 20 each for the Beach Resort and Farmhouse rebuild, 10 to unlock the Island Trader and the Parrot Express, and more for the mailbox, Farm Obelisk, and permanent volcano bridge. The headline reward comes at 100 Golden Walnuts, which unlocks Qi’s Walnut Room in Island West. Inside is a Perfection Tracker, a Special Order Board, and a Vending Machine that sells items in exchange for Qi Gems.
The Island Farm
The Island Farm in Island West is a second farm that, like the Greenhouse, lets you grow any crop regardless of the season. It starts covered in logs, stones, and weeds, and you can place sprinklers and plant fruit trees once it’s cleared. Crows never spawn here, so scarecrows aren’t necessary. Parrots repair the dilapidated farmhouse for 20 Golden Walnuts, giving you a four-room house with a kitchen, a Tropical Bed per farmer, and a shipping bin. For more walnuts they’ll add a mailbox (5) and then a Farm Obelisk (20), and building the obelisk hands you a Warp Totem: Island. The west side has hundreds of plantable tiles, making the island a strong year-round growing base.
Explore the island together
Ginger Island shines in co-op, where walnuts are shared and friends can split puzzle-hunting, fossil donations, and volcano runs. If you want a persistent world your group can return to, a Stardew Valley server from XGamingServer keeps the farm running between sessions, and our documentation walks through getting set up.

How many Golden Walnuts are there in total?
There are 130 Golden Walnuts to find across Ginger Island. They come from exploration, monsters, farming, fishing, mining, breaking volcano crates, and solving the island’s puzzles.
