The Deep North — Valheim’s final biome, added in the 1.0 release — is home to a small but brutal roster of creatures. Unlike the Ashlands, it has fewer enemies, but they’re bigger and hit far harder. The good news: once you know each creature’s weakness, the biome gets a lot more manageable. Here’s every Deep North creature with its health and damage weaknesses, pulled straight from the 1.0 game data — plus the one combat rule that carries you through most of it.

The one rule: fire beats almost everything
Here’s the pattern most players miss — the majority of Deep North creatures are weak to fire. Elaking, Seals, Moose and Barka all take extra damage from fire, and resist frost (fitting, for a frozen biome). That makes the new Frostfire weapons — which add a chunk of fire damage on top of physical — an excellent all-round choice for clearing the biome, along with plain fire arrows. There are only two exceptions, and we’ll cover both below.
Every Deep North creature: HP & weaknesses
| Creature | Health | Weak to | Resists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baby Seal | 200 | — | spirit (harmless) |
| Elaking | 350 | Fire | frost, spirit |
| Seal | 400 | Fire | spirit |
| Moose | 1,000 | Fire | blunt, slash, frost, spirit |
| Eyeless One | 1,400 | — (any physical) | frost, spirit |
| Barka | 2,200 | Fire only | blunt, slash, pierce, frost, lightning, poison |
| Gammeltroll | 3,000 | see below | everything |
| Kall Fimbulbringer (boss) | ~47,000 | blunt, slash | pierce, fire, frost, lightning, spirit |
Notable creatures
Elaking
The signature Deep North hunter — found above ground at night and inside the Winding Tunnels dungeon. At 350 HP it isn’t tanky, and it’s weak to fire, so a Frostfire weapon or fire arrows drop it quickly. Drops Elaking Hair Bundles.
Moose
Not just a threat — Moose are tameable and rideable, the Deep North’s answer to the Lox. In a fight they resist blunt, slash and frost, so lead with fire. They drop Moose Meat, Hide and Sinew for the new gear and food.
Barka — fire or nothing
Barka resembles a frozen version of The Elder, and it’s the clearest example of the fire rule: it resists blunt, slash, pierce, frost, lightning and poison — practically everything except fire. Bring fire damage or you’ll barely scratch it.

Gammeltroll — the exception you don’t melee
The largest creature in all of Valheim. Gammeltroll resists essentially every weapon damage type, so you don’t fight it conventionally — you deal with it using Ember Charges (explosives). When killed it petrifies into a statue you can build around, or blow up for Petrified Tissue — the raw source of Bloodgold, the metal behind the new Nord weapons.
The boss: Kall Fimbulbringer breaks the fire rule
Here’s the trap: after a whole biome of fire being king, the final boss resists fire (along with pierce, frost and lightning) and is immune to spirit. Against Kall Fimbulbringer you switch to pure blunt or slash — a Nord Sledge or greatsword. Full strategy, HP phases and gear in our how to beat Kall Fimbulbringer guide.
Gear up before you go north
Match your loadout to the biome: a fire-dealing weapon for the general roster, blunt for the boss, and the best food you can cook. Compare every option in our Valheim weapons database and food calculator. Frequently asked questions
What are Deep North creatures weak to?
Most of them — Elaking, Seals, Moose and Barka — are weak to fire and resist frost. The exceptions are Gammeltroll (resists everything; use Ember Charges) and the boss Kall Fimbulbringer (resists fire; use blunt/slash).
How do you kill a Gammeltroll?
It resists weapon damage, so use Ember Charges (explosives). Blowing up its petrified form yields Petrified Tissue, which smelts into Bloodgold for the new Nord weapon tier.
Are Moose tameable in Valheim?
Yes — Moose are tameable and rideable, like the Lox, and drop Moose Meat, Hide and Sinew.
