Conan Exiles throws a lot of monsters at you, but its bosses are where the real progression lives. Legendary world bosses guard skeleton keys and legendary chests, while dungeon bosses gate some of the strongest gear and knowledge in the Exiled Lands. This guide breaks down the most important bosses, where to find them, how to beat them, and what they drop, so your next expedition ends with loot instead of a corpse run.
Two kinds of bosses: world bosses vs dungeon bosses
It helps to split Conan Exiles bosses into two categories. Legendary world bosses roam fixed spots out in the open world. They usually sit dormant at their spawn until you get close, then turn hostile. When you kill one and harvest the corpse, you have a chance to pull a Skeleton Key, which you then use to open a nearby legendary chest full of legendary weapons. Perks and spells that improve harvesting (such as Careful Harvest) can raise that key drop rate dramatically.
Dungeon bosses sit at the end of a dungeon as a scripted encounter. Instead of a random key, they tend to drop fixed, named loot, recipes, or quest artifacts. The Dregs, the Black Keep, the Sinkhole, and Warmaker’s Sanctuary all end with one of these. If you want a fuller tour of the dungeons themselves, our Conan Exiles dungeons guide walks the routes room by room.
The Abysmal Remnant (The Dregs)
The Dregs is one of the earliest dungeons new exiles can clear, located near the southern river. Its boss, the Abysmal Remnant, is a giant slug-like Giant-King creature that keeps half its body submerged in a central pool. That pool is acid, so standing in melee range while it sits is a quick death.
- How to beat it: It fires acid projectiles and breathes a cone of acid in front of itself. Bait its lunge out of the pool, then strike during the brief window when it sits exposed before sinking back.
- Ranged option: You can chip it down with a bow from the stairs where you can see its head before it aggros. It takes a lot of arrows, but it works solo.
- Rewards: Abysmal-themed gear including the Abysmal Sword, Abysmal Daggers, and Abysmal Remnant materials used in crafting.
The Kinscourge (The Black Keep)
The Black Keep is a frozen-north dungeon near the Ruins of Xullan. Its final boss, The Kinscourge, was in life Tyros the Deathbringer, a half-breed son of the Priestking, raised again as an undead. He hits with surprising speed and has high health and armor, but there is a meaningful gap between his attack flurries.
- How to beat it: Dodge through his fast openers, then punish the recovery gap. A high-level fighter thrall absorbs much of the pressure while you focus damage.
- Rewards: The Kinscourge drops the Tears of Two Races, one of the artifacts used to craft the Keystone for the endgame.
The Undead Dragon (The Sinkhole)
At the very bottom of the Sinkhole waits the Undead Dragon, one of the toughest fights in the Exiled Lands. Lore-wise it was the strongest dragon the Giant Kings ever made, slain by Tyros and then raised when he was cursed with immortality. It carries a very high amount of health and armor.
- How to beat it: Come prepared with strong armor, healing supplies, and a leveled fighter thrall. Keep moving to avoid its heavy melee swings and breath, and grind it down rather than trading blows head-on.
- Rewards: Harvesting its corpse drops the Star of the Champion, another of the six artifacts needed to complete the Keystone.
Champion of the Warmaker (Warmaker’s Sanctuary)
Warmaker’s Sanctuary is a high-end dungeon, and its boss, the Champion of the Warmaker, is an armored giant wielding a huge mace. The arena also has four locked side rooms, each holding a chest with high-end treasure.
- How to beat it: Respect its mace swings, which deal heavy damage and can knock you back. Bring strong armor, a shield, and a top-tier thrall to split aggro.
- Rewards: Armor Scraps plus a chance at legendary weapons. Steles in the area teach Warmaker Weapons, Godbreaker Armor, and Grandmaster crafting knowledge, making this dungeon a key stop for feat hunters. See our feats and knowledge guide for how those unlocks fit together.
Legendary world bosses worth hunting
Out in the open world, a handful of named legendary creatures are the bread and butter of skeleton-key farming:
| Boss | Type / region | What it guards |
|---|---|---|
| Rotbranch | Plant elemental, multiple Exiled Lands spawns (and Siptah) | Beginner-friendly skeleton keys |
| Sand Reaper Hive Queen | Insectoid, desert (near Voyager’s Vigil, Oasis of Nekhet, The Passage) | Skeleton key + legendary chest loot |
| King Beneath (Barrow King) | Undead Giant King, northwestern Tundra | Skeleton key + legendary chest loot |
| Demon Spider | Spinner’s Ridge, western Isle of Siptah | One of Siptah’s open-world legendary fights |
Note that more than half of the Exiled Lands legendary world bosses are not present on the Isle of Siptah, where endgame loot leans more on Elder Vaults and chests at dungeon ends. Whichever map you play, a leveled fighter thrall (a Cimmerian Berserker or volcano fighter is a popular pick) makes these fights dramatically faster. If you are still building your roster, our followers and war party guide covers capturing and leveling them.
General boss-fight tips
- Bring a leveled fighter thrall to tank and split damage; most bosses become trivial with a strong follower.
- Stock healing items and bandages, and learn each boss’s attack tells so you can dodge the heavy hits.
- Match your weapon to the fight: ranged kiting trivializes the Abysmal Remnant, while burst melee wins against the Kinscourge’s attack gaps.
- Harvest every legendary corpse fully; harvesting perks and spells boost your skeleton-key drop chance.
- On a private or community server, an admin can tune boss health and damage so groups of different sizes get a fair fight.
Boss farming is far more fun with friends on a server you control, where you set the rules, loot rates, and respawn timers. If you are setting one up, our Conan Exiles game server plans spin up in minutes, and the Conan Exiles server setup docs walk you through configuration and admin commands.
FAQ
What is the hardest boss in Conan Exiles?
The Undead Dragon at the bottom of the Sinkhole is widely considered one of the toughest fights, thanks to its very high health and armor. Endgame dungeon bosses like the Champion of the Warmaker are also serious challenges that reward proper preparation and a strong thrall.
How do I get legendary weapons from world bosses?
Kill a legendary world boss, harvest its corpse to obtain a Skeleton Key, then use that key to open a nearby legendary chest. The chest contains a random legendary item. Harvesting perks and detect-resources effects can increase your chance of getting the key.
Do I need a thrall to beat Conan Exiles bosses?
Not strictly, but a leveled fighter thrall makes nearly every boss far easier by tanking hits and adding damage. Solo players can still win with kiting, good armor, a shield, and patience, especially against ranged-friendly fights like the Abysmal Remnant.
