Skeletons are the archers of the night — relentless, accurate on Hard, and able to hit you from across a ravine. This guide covers their exact damage, drops, the daylight-burning mechanic, every biome variant, and the fastest way to close the gap and kill them. All numbers verified against the official Minecraft Wiki.
Skeleton stats at a glance
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | 20 HP (10 hearts) |
| Bow damage (Normal) | 3.5–5 HP per arrow |
| Fire rate | Every 3s (Easy/Normal), every 2s (Hard) |
| Detection range | 16 blocks |
| Experience | 5 XP (+1–3 per equipped item) |
Where Skeletons spawn
Skeletons spawn at light level 0 in the Overworld (7 or less in the Nether) across almost every biome. In Java they come in groups of 4. There’s also a 1% chance a spider spawns with a skeleton rider — the dreaded spider jockey.
Daylight burning
Skeletons catch fire in direct sunlight (when the sun is up and light level exceeds 11). They survive by standing in shade, under a block, in water, or by wearing a helmet (which slowly loses durability). This is why you’ll see them cowering under trees at dawn — and why a helmet on a skeleton means it won’t burn.
Drops
| Drop | Amount | With Looting III |
|---|---|---|
| Bones | 0–2 (avg 1) | 0–5 (avg 2.5) |
| Arrows | 0–2 (avg 1) | 0–5 (avg 2.5) |
| Equipment (bow/armour) | ~8.5% chance | ~11.5% |
Bones craft into bone meal (instant plant growth and white dye), so a skeleton farm doubles as an infinite bone-meal supply.
Biome variants
- Stray — snowy biomes; fires arrows of Slowness. A regular skeleton left in powder snow also converts to a Stray.
- Bogged — swamps and mangrove swamps; fires poison arrows.
- Wither Skeleton — Nether fortresses (a fortress skeleton spawn has a 20% chance to be one); drops the coal, bones and rare skulls needed to summon the Wither.
How to fight Skeletons
- Close the distance fast — they strafe and kite, so sprint straight at them; within melee range they’re easy.
- Use a shield — it blocks arrows completely while you approach.
- Smite helps — skeletons are undead, so a Smite sword does bonus damage. Instant Health potions hurt them; Instant Damage heals them.
- Fight during the day if you can — sunlight does the work for you.
Java vs Bedrock differences
- Java skeletons shoot underwater (slower arrows); Bedrock ones switch to melee underwater.
- Java armour never loses durability; Bedrock armour degrades.
- Groups of 4 in Java vs 1–2 in Bedrock.
FAQ
How do I get a skeleton spawner farm? Dungeon skeleton spawners are ideal — enclose the spawner, funnel skeletons into a drop or a 1-hit killing chamber for endless bones, arrows and XP.
Why do some skeletons have enchanted bows? On Normal/Hard, skeletons can spawn with enchanted gear based on regional difficulty — those bows can drop for you.
