The Ashlands are Valheim’s brutal endgame biome — a lava-soaked warzone of Charred undead, flying Voltures and fortified strongholds. This is the toughest content in the game, home to the boss Fader. Here’s how to land safely, survive, and gear up in the Ashlands.
Getting there: the boiling sea
The water surrounding the Ashlands is boiling and will destroy wooden ships. Only the Drakkar — the longship you can build after defeating The Queen in the Mistlands — can survive the voyage. Voltures patrol the hot waters and coastline, so be ready to fight as you approach and land.
Fire resistance is mandatory
Everything here burns. The standout gear is the Flametal armor set, which provides built-in heat resistance — the Breastplate and Greaves give around 20% heat resistance each, stacking to roughly 40% together. Combine armor with fire resistance barley wine and you can actually function in the lava fields. See the armor guide for the full Ashlands sets.
Survival tactics
- Travel along coasts. Enemies only spawn on solid ground, so hugging the coastline reduces encounters.
- Mark safe spots. Cleared Putrid Holes make good recovery points to regenerate health and stamina.
- Watch for Charred Fortresses — marked by a beam of green light shooting into the sky, located inland between the lava fields. The easiest way in is a Battering Ram, which you can build from materials found outside.
Key resource: Flametal
Flametal is the Ashlands’ signature metal, mined from glowing deposits in the lava fields and used for the game’s best weapons and armor. A tamed Asksvin (the only tameable Ashlands creature) has no carrying-capacity limit, making it invaluable for hauling Flametal — see our taming guide.
The boss: Fader
Fader is the Ashlands boss and the hardest fight in Valheim so far. Come fully geared in Flametal, with the best food, fire resistance and healing mead. Check the boss tracker for Fader’s exact summon materials and drops.
What’s beyond the Ashlands
For years the Ashlands were the end of the road — until Valheim 1.0 on September 9, 2026 adds the frozen Deep North as the new final biome. See our Deep North guide to prepare.
Conquer the Ashlands together
The Ashlands punish solo players hard. A Valheim dedicated server keeps your world online 24/7 so your crew can establish a beachhead, farm Flametal and take on Fader together — with full crossplay at the 1.0 launch.
